Alex Smith restructures deal to remain with 49ers
As a result of his loyalty, Smith was able to rework the final two years of his contract and stay with the 49ers. According to a source, Smith will make $4 million a season in 2009 and 2010, in addition to base salaries that weren't immediately made known.

In his previous contract, he was scheduled to make $24.6 million in the final two years.

"We have reached an agreement with Alex and his agent to keep him as a member of the San Francisco 49ers," general manager Scot McCloughan said in a statement. "Alex expressed a deep interest to remain with the team and that feeling was mutual."

Look I know Smith is widely considered to be a bust, but in 2006 with Norv Turner as OC he threw for 2,890 yards, with 16 TDs.

1. Who is going to be your starting QB next year?
And if it's not Smith, and he's still on the team, how can he as a #1 overall pick (right?) not be considered a bust?

2. It'll be a two-way competition between Shaun Hill and Smith
Edited on Tue Mar-10-09 02:31 PM by Auggie
Smith has been on I.R. for one and a half years. I think he gets one more chance to prove himself.

Expect an offense planned around power running and a short passing game.

3. "With Norv Turner as OC"
Hmm. Norv's pretty good with QB's. Not sure he's the same QB in a different system. And even then he wasn't great shakes... I don't think he's the answer.

7. I'm just saying
he has shown promise in the past. After that 2006 season, he was injured early the next year and has pretty much been that way since...now with the restructuring of his contract, a healthy Smith has a chance to once again show what he can do.

10. Dude! Norv Turner??
:wtf:

The only reason he's been employable is that he inherited a Hall of Fame offense in Dallas.

less now that TO is gone) and you still can't manage to even secure a wild card spot?

FAIL.

15. On the bright side, you guys have a bright, shiny new
stadium in which to not qualify for the playoffs again this season.

That's some consolation, right?

19. I couldn't be less happy about being owned by the Yorks.
However, I don't believe Dallas will be in the playoffs this season, let alone HOSTING playoff games?!

You don't seriously think they're good enough to get home field advantage, even if hell froze over and they managed to sneak into the playoffs?

They'd be a wildcard team at the most and would be on the road.

BTW, this whole situation of Dallas playing on Thanksgiving has to end.

How many more holidays will I have to suffer through? :puke:

20. You're right, there cboy.
It may only be one, as they will probably be either a two or three seed.

BTW, JJ will continue to host the Thanksgiving Day game just to irritate the hell out of you!

It makes for a wonderful day for me!!

5. It's shocking to think before his contract was re-worked, he
was scheduled to make $9.625 million this year. :wow:

Hopefully he turns it around.

16. I think he's really lucky to get $4 million a year
Sounds like a lot considering his recent history. And while we don't know for sure, I don't think there were other teams dying to sign him.

But like you, I hope he turns it around.

17. Well ESPN is reporting it's 4 million but the Chronicle says
it could be closer to what back-up quarterbacks make, which is in the 2-3 million dollar range.

He says he wanted to stay, but you're right .. nobody else may have wanted him.

11. Well, if they start him, they can draft Tebow next year with their #1 pick.
Oh, wait, I almost forgot about Detroit. Maybe Tebow will still be available at #2 if the Lions draft another WR for a team that doesn't block, run or defend well.

14. The Dolphins will definitely be in more of a position to select
Jesus' son, considering they will finish with a worse record than San Francisco.

Don't forget Miami's record was filled with W's against easy teams.

And they walked about with a W against the 49ers, even though it was a complete domination by San Francisco.

If they had any class, they'd forfeit the win to us and admit they didn't deserve to "win."

21. I'm no fan of Miami,
but at least they managed W's against bad teams instead of L's. I don't think a team that managed 3 of it's 7 wins against the 2 worst teams in the NFL exactly had a tough schedule either. Looking it over, though, they won't be the worst team not named the Lions. They won't even be the worst team in the Bay area.

22. 49ers played 5 games against playoff teams
versus the WEAK schedule enabled Dolphins 3. Remember the Niners played the NFC East last year.

The 49ers played 2 games against the NFC Super Bowl representative, losing twice by a combined score of 52-37 (an average loss of 7.5). Meanwhile, the WEAK schedule enabled Dolphins played 1 game against Arizona and were thoroughly whipped 31-10...a 21 point loss. So, by at least 1 measuring stick, the 49ers were 13.5 points better than the Dolphins.

Miami was without a doubt one of the worst division winners in NFL history...the beat down they received at home in the playoffs was just further confirmation of something those of us with real football knowledge already knew.

It's a lot easier listening to malcontents gloat than project blame at everyone else.

The AFC East was a hell of a lot stronger than the NFC West. Any team in football would have chosen 6 games against Arizona, St. Louis, and Seattle over New England, New York, and Buffalo.

24. By another measuring stick...
The Dolphins throttled New England @NE in week 4 who then beat the 49ers the very next week @SF by 9.

Miami made an awful, awful showing in the playoffs, no doubt, and did benefit from a weak schedule, but the comparing their schedule to the 49ers isn't saying much.

The 49ers 7 wins came against Sea, Det, STL twice, Buffalo, the Jets and Washington. So they beat 1 team at 9-7, 1 team at 8-8, and 1 team @ 7-9, and 4 teams with 4 or fewer wins.

The Dolphins beat 11-5 NE, 9-7 Jets, 8-8 SD, 8-8 Denver, 7-9 Buffalo twice, and then a few of the same dregs that SF did (Rams, Seattle, substitute KC and OAK for DET).

The Dolphins had some ugly wins against bad teams, but the worst team they lost to was, I think, the 8-8 Texans.
