1. Thanks for posting the whole match, Wetzelbill
Awesome watch. Even for an Iowa fan. I'd bet my mortgage on Metcalf next year. There will be hell to pay.

2. Wow. Watched that in THE sports bar in Iowa City.
Metcalf was flat. Lifeless. The crowd was beyond angry over Caldwell's antics at the end of the match.

4. sometimes that happens
For whatever reason a person just goes out and bonks. It happened at the worst possible time for him, but Metcalf knows he's mortal now.

5. This match was the talk of the town, today.
Could there possibly be a bigger asshole than Caldwell for his antics? The general consensus.

6. yes and they have no bias on it either
lol

I know for a fact I would have pushed somebody for doing that too though, I'm just saying, lol.

I know Mike Zadick a little from our MT wrestling days, I congratulated him on the national title, didn't even want to touch this topic though.

What I didn't like wasn't the action right at the end, I'm not big on those type of celebrations but it was right as time was going out, and I didn't think the push was that bad either, but the taking time out for an injury. And by injury I mean "injury", because that was suspect at best. He looked like he was gassing out so bad. Injury time shouldn't be abused like that and an honest athlete wouldn't do it. I think it lacks integrity. The guy wrestled a great match, but the old school in me can't stand taking an injury timeout in that way. Catching your breath in that way isn't honorable at all.

7. The injury timeout was the more important topic.
The celebration - ok, fine. A little excessive. I'm with you, though. It was the timeout that has all of us Iowans riled. Looking forward to seeing these two wrestle again. Nuff said.

9. In the history of Division I wrestling ,where does this upset rank?
Clearly, behind Gable-Owings. Besides that match, I've been wracking my mind to come up with one of this stature. Anybody?

13. Steve Marianetti over Lincoln Macilravy was big
Terry Brands lost I think to Alan Fried in a fairly big upset once. Les Gutches came in undefeated and dominant as a sophomore, probably in 1994 or so and he was caught and pinned in the quarters by Reese Andy. T.J. Williams was upset by Larry Quisel in the semis one year. Those last couple wouldn't qualify as monumental upsets though, I just remember them because they were big upsets and Montana guys were the ones who won.

10. Upon further review....
I am not so upset at Caldwell, he very well may have had back spasms rather than faking it, he is a great actor if not, I have been hurt and dog tired and got a pin late in a match and wanted to run a victory lap... I don't like the celebration but what the hey, the kid wrestled a brilliant match, he is a force to be contended with...

I am not so sure how huge an upset it was, Caldwell took a 4th last year and they were both 37-0 coming in, ranked 1 and 2 I believe. Metcalf had a 69 match winning streak but his last and only other collegiate loss was to Caldwell...

I wrestled high school for three years, finally started varsity as a senior, I wish I knew the sport existed before sophomore gym class when I pinned a big greaser, ool... I tried as a walk on for a few weeks in college but it was 1972 and my buddies were partying and NIU had a 3 time Florida state champ at my weight.... I have followed HS wrestling in Illinois for decades and kept in touch with college and international but we get the Big Ten network on cable and I noticed 6 weeks ago they were doing meets, I watched religiously and watched the Big Ten Championships a couple of weeks ago...

Keep an eye on Andrew Howe of Wisconsin, he plowed through the Big Ten as a true freshman at 165 and took 2nd in the NCAA... Hard to describe his style, strong, quick, smart and deliberate maybe? He came in as an unknown and left a 3-2 loser in the NCAA finals at 19 years old...

Peace to all wrestlers, we should start a forum or group...

11. never cry wolf. I beg to differ.
Huge upset. Sure Metcalf got pinned by him in November 07. The video is on you tube. Looks like he caught Metcalf in a cradle in some HS gym. 19-3 this past November. I wrestled in HS also. Sectional champ in the 9th grade, then wrestled under a future NCAA champ (CD Mock, NCarolina 1982) my sophomore year. I grew tired of cutting weight and the practices and left the sport after that year. I still respect the shit out of the sport because it did instill the need to stay in shape. I work out daily and I thank wrestling for it. Living in Iowa City is kind of wild because it is the Mecca for the sport. I've come full circle. I'm forced to keep an eye on it. By the number of posters who viewed the match on this thread, I think there's a lot of us who secretly love it. Good post, my friend.

15. there is a big difference
Edited on Thu Mar-26-09 09:17 PM by Wetzelbill
in being a relatively normal athlete and then having to compete against somebody who is an All-American world class type of athlete, isn't there? Some of those guys are almost not human, lol. So how did you compete against him?

14. another former wrestler checking in
I wrestled in middle school and high school. Several time state placer in freestyle, won a few district and division titles, also won two state freestyle state championships. In high school wrestling I was a two time division champion, took second and third at state. I also have competed internationally and was a member of a Montana team that went to Bulgaria. I ended up having health problems so I never wrestled in college, but I did coach a few years in high school. I sometimes think about coming out of retirement for some submission grappling etc, lol. A guy I beat before almost made Canada's Olympic team four years ago and one of my high school rivals has won some MMA fights, so all of this sometimes gives me bad thoughts about trying it out. :)

Yeah that would be cool to start a group. Wrestling has instilled in me a sort of dedication and competitiveness that most people don't have. And like Condem says there has been a lot of views to this, so there has to be some out more wrestlers and fans out there.

16. My wife (happyiowan) and I watched it in THE bar, Wetzel.
Long time since I've seen a match like that excite us Iowa Citians. Intense, to say the least. We're spoiled out here, but that sent the heartbeats soaring. The thing about your video. You turn it on and you hear the noise. Something very big was happening here. The views keep going up so people saw the same thing we did. Cool.

17. I'd like to get out your way one of these days
That's one thing I'd like to do is check out some Iowa wrestling matches. Maybe next year I'll hit that bar with you and we can watch the rematch in the finals.
