Isiah Thomas Takes Coaching Job at Florida International University

Published: April 14, 2009
Isiah Thomas is moving to South Florida, where he will pursue the daunting task of simultaneously rebuilding a losing program and his own battered reputation.

Thomas, fired one year ago by the Knicks, was named the coach at Florida International University on Tuesday. The job with a relatively obscure midmajor with little history of success is a steep drop in prestige for Thomas, but it gives him what he seemingly needed most: a chance to redeem himself.

Thomas was removed as the Knicks’ coach and president after a four-year tenure marked by controversy, infighting, exorbitant payrolls and listless play.

2. They figured they'd hire someone who really knows about losing programs.
Though Thomas seems much better at making them then fixing them.

6. Referring to Thomas' sexual harassment lawsuit with the Knicks.
The plantiff got 11 million dollars. Perhaps old habits die hard.

8. Half-hearted stab at it, though I don't really like it myself:
He's donating his salary for the first year of the contract back to the athletics department, so that's not a bad thing. Maybe he can be a decent recruiter, and get the team into a better conference.
