John Madden retires
http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/30246064/

He is now well past his prime, but in his prime he was one of the best.

3. I really liked him, thought he really had insight..in 1991 when everyone figured
Buffalo would blow out the Giants, he didn't buy it, and emphasized their defense. But yeah, should have left, he'd been around so long he sort of became a cariacture.

5. Exactly, he will always have a fond place in my heart though
as he was just starting out in the booth as I really started getting into football. So he was like my first teacher, so to speak. "4 or more yards is a successful run", and, "a team should always be able to get one yard on any given play"

4. I wouldn't know. I'm in DC and listen to Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff.
But your opinion seems to be a consensus.

The Favre fixation was a bit much for me.

6. I find it ironic that he is retiring almost right after it seems Favre
has really retired.

12. He had quite the man-crush on Favre. I liked Favre...
but man, was he over-rated.

For scrappy QBs, I'll still choose Flutie over Favre.

16. Wish I still had a link to an article about how Brett "Favor" was the most
over-rated athlete ever...he's probably #20 on the all-time QB list, but too many people are convinced he's #1.

7. To be honest, I never thought I'd see the day.
Yeah he had his quirks but about 90% of the color commentators in the NFL annoy the crap out of me. Madden never did.

8. He was excellent at what he did.
Sure, he could be silly a lot, but he knows the game as well as anyone involved in it.

Thanks, John. :toast:

10. Collinsworth Named Madden's Successor
<snip>

"Cris Collinsworth will succeed John Madden as the analyst in the NBC broadcast booth for the network's Sunday night NFL game telecasts, NBC executive Dick Ebersol announced during a conference call with reporters today.

Madden announced his retirement from broadcasting earlier today, rejecting an offer made Wednesday by Ebersol to work the network's September and November games next season and take October and December off.

Collinsworth had been on the NBC studio show.

"John's successor will be Cris Collinsworth," Ebersol, the chairman of NBC Sports, said during the conference call. "... Cris has always given us the luxury of having the two best broadcasters."

15. That's a shame he won't be around to watch what has become
an annual tradition:

The Detroit Lions getting blown out on Thanksgiving.

17. am I the only one who DOESN'T like Madden's style?
I know he knows his stuff, but I find him annoying in the extreme, and I'll be glad to not be forced to listen to his inane babble.

19. He's not that great, but sadly he's still far better than about 95% of football "analysts" out there
That's not really saying much. Actually the only one I can think of that I actually find interesting to listen to is Ron Jaworski when Tony Kornheiser is not in the booth.

20. Thank the gods, if I had to hear him jock sniff Brett Favre one more time I'd have to kill him.
Madden has been unlistenable for years now, long past the time to go. He's been annoying for nearly 20 years now.
