Being a real or true sports fan

I have read some pretty silly comments/ideas being thrown around on this board. The idea that one must root for one's home team to be a "true" or "real" sports fan is absolutely ludicrous.

A real sports fan is one that sticks by their team in good times and bad. It has nothing to do with how close that team is to them. In the days of limited media, it was a matter of practicality to root for one's home team. After all your local papers and news would pretty much cover them exclusively. Now in the age of internet news coverage and team message boards you can follow any team any where on the planet. Plus with satellite and cable packages you can often see most, if not all, your team's games.

Beyond that we live in a mobile society. It's very common for people to move to different parts of the Country. So your local teams may change during one's lifetime. What then? Do you abandon your first team in favor of your new favorite home team? That strikes me as being pretty fickle.


You know on sports forum rah rah stuff is expected and in moderate doses is a good thing. Statements that are lacking in any sort of logic or reason simply, on the other hand, serve only to drag down the level of discouse.

Beyond that I used the term "real" as matter of convience and to address the term as it was being used. More accurate descriptions would be involve how knowledgeable a fan is, how loyal they are to a particular team and how serious a fan they are (do they follow the sport casually or are they immersed in it). Frankly the whole idea of "Real" and I guess unreal sports fan is a pretty silly one. I have been on sports forums for years. Usually they are following one team. I can tell you one way to lose the respect of a group is start declaring yourself a true fan while declaring others are not.
