Thrill of the fight fuels Yanks-Sox rivalry
Why is the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry so good, so intense, so anticipated, apart from the usual historical antagonism, personality clashes and dueling, gigantic fan bases? It's the competition.

The rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees needs no introduction, in part because it never seems to leave the stage.
---
The Red Sox, historically the supporting players in this drama, the victims, the foils, have changed all that in this new millennium. They are the only Major League Baseball team to have won two World Series championships in this century. This puts them, in that period of time, two World Series championships ahead of the Yankees. That sort of thing just makes the championship drought in the Bronx that much more difficult to take.

But when these two clubs face each other, the playing field is very close to level. Over the last seven regular seasons, the Yankees lead the series, 68-63.

The biggest season spread in that period was merely 11-8. Three times the series has been decided by a 10-9 margin, and once it was tied. Overall, the Yankees have won five of the last seven season series.
--
This rivalry is not just hype. It is the real deal, on the field; close, competitive, compelling.

I'm glad the Bruins won quickly and have a few days off so I don't have to choose which one to watch. Even with my love for all things hockey, the Sox/Yankees matchups are always a treat.

1. I hate to use the word pivotal, but this series is pivotal...
...each team had its share of problems at the start, but now are improving...the series will show which team can build on that...American's Team or Satan's Team.

6. "America's team"? Lol
Just like Dallas the Red Sox are rapidly becoming HATED by the rest of America ....there is little difference between the Sox and Yanks to the rest of America...seriously ....lovable losers they are NOT . And tagging them with such an arrogant nick does not help. Personally I would be thrilled if NEITHER the Sox or the Yanks make the playoffs

13. Joeybee MAYBE BUT....
There are people running around with avatars of "Red Sox Nation" on it. There ARE Bosox fans that ARE using this term seriously.
Believe me, there is now just as much dislike for Boston outside of New England as there is for the Yankees.

18. I don't WANT them to be "America's Team"
They are the olde towne team. The local one. Let's keep it that way. :)

But they do draw a loyal crowd in every park they play in.

19. I know...when people say the Sox are as hated as the Spankees, that's BS...
...whenever and wherever they play, attendance goes up...2 titles after 86 years of misery doesn't make one feel they have won too much.

4. Where do you get that figure?
Or are you just exaggerating to make a point?

For 2009, the Yankees are of course first at 201,449,889..Red Sox fourth with a payroll of 121,745,999.

The Pirates are third from the bottom..48,693,000

The Giants 13th...82,616,450

5. Yeah, but if it was your team it wouldn't bother you.
Everyone only complains because their teams don't, wont, or can't spend the money these teams do. The result is that teams like the Sox and Yankees consistently have quality products on the field for the fans. There isn't a team in the league that wouldn't kill for the fan base, and resulting revenue, having a good team generates.

And money aside, how can anyone be a baseball fan and not appreciate the battle between these two teams? They have some of the most exciting games you can watch, and isn't that the point of being a fan of any sport? The complaining really just comes across as sour grapes, and not a true reaction to the quality of the rivalry. I can understand the resentment, but to yawn at the matchup seems a little silly if you really enjoy watching good baseball.

8. That's first rate Soviet propaganda.
Most baseball fans, who aren't bandwagon jumpers, do not like the Red Sox or Yankees.

So you, along with Mr. Piit, can both climb down from your high horse.

21. Make that 68-64.
Sox tie it in the 9th on a 2 run homer and Yoooookalis wins it with a boomer off of Mariano. Whatta game.

My daughter's working in the souvenir store on Yawkey Way...I can only imagine how the post game surge must be...
