Bruins' Jacobs hopes Winter Classic goes to Fenway
Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs is hopeful the rumors are true that the NHL Winter Classic is coming to Boston.

On an end-of-the-season conference call with reporters Wednesday morning, Jacobs, who also serves as the Chairman of the NHL Board of Governors, said like everyone else he is waiting for an official announcement from the NHL regarding the site for the 2010 Winter Classic, but "everything I have seen acts like, looks like and smells like it's going to be in Boston."

Jacobs didn't hide his desire to hold the Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at Fenway Park, famous home of the Boston Red Sox. The previous two Winter Classics took place at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo and Wrigley Field in Chicago.

"Traditionally the League announces (the host for the Winter Classic) in July and from everything we can tell it will probably be the biggest classic," Jacobs said. "I really want this in Boston. I think our fans want it. I think it will be the biggest classic that the National Hockey League has had. I think it will be the most successful and the most demanded.

"I also know we will only be able to accommodate our season ticket holders at that point," Jacobs continued, adding he expects numerous corporate requests. "I think it's going to be a barnburner, tremendous. It's probably been the worst kept secret in Boston, but they won't confirm to me so until they can confirm it to me, so we'll just have to go on the basis that we think it's going to happen and I think it's going to happen."

Please let it happen, and let Montreal be the enemy...er, opponent. Fenway Puck!

1. I don't know why they limit this to just one per year
It's obviously a popular event and I'd bet is their biggest nationwide TV broadcast of the entire year (in the regular season). It can't be that much money to throw up a rink in the middle of a baseball field, either.

3. And to quote Mike Milbury, it makes the All Star game look ridiculous.
The Winter Classic is a far better showcase for what hockey is about than the lame ass All Star game every year. They'll keep it at one per year because they want to associate that game with New Year's Day, plus more of them would make them less special, but I could watch more and not mind.
