Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves installment 6
Tommy Nevin is Gunned Down

As told by Forrest Baker

Strolling down Harrison St. one afternoon toward the Ambush bar, Tommy noticed some Latin teenagers ahead of him acting strangely. As he approached them, they appeared to be playing with what looked like a toy gun. As he passed by, they pointed it at him and fired. Thinking one of them had only hit him with hid fist as the “toy” gun made bang bang noises, Tommy ran ahead and into the Ambush bar, appropriate name for his destination considering what had happened. Once inside and feeling safe, Tommy ordered a beer. After a few minutes, while sipping his beer, Tommy noticed his shirt under his coat was soaked in blood. Drawing the bartender’s attention, he asked for a phone, by know knowing that he wasn’t hit by a fist, but by a bullet. By this time the bartender and the other patrons had seen the blood and became hysterical and frightened. Tommy said he not only had to call for an ambulance, but also had to calm down the others. When the ambulance came, they took him to St Francis Hospital that treats burns and gunshot victims. Ironically, the same doctor who treats policemen’s gunshot wounds attended to Tommy. It seems Tommy’s fat stomach had saved his life. The small caliber handgun had only driven the bullet into fat, which slowed it down and when it hit the ribs it didn’t penetrate the lungs or other internal organs.
The next day Preston, Jeffrey and I went to the hospital to celebrate his safe delivery from the hands of death. We brought brandy and cream for Brandy Alexanders and marijuana. Fate again smiled on Tommy Nevin.
