Gypsies Tramps and Thieves: installment10 "An Invitation to Dinner"
An Invitation to Dinner

As usual there was no money, the cupboards at the “Castle Conser” were bare. That didn’t phase Preston. I had a truck, so I was invited to dinner; Preston always needed an audience especially when there was a scam in the offing. Thinking back, a getaway vehicle was handy also. We prepared for dinner, and locked up the Castle for the night. It was Z’s or Zim’s on North point that was taking the hit tonight. You see, Preston always chose restaurants with a bar (preferably in separate areas) Jose’ (Carmen) called the scam “Dios Paga”, or God pays. Being from Buenos Aires, she knew this one well. Anyway, Preston and I had a lovely dinner; then it was time to pay. The Margrave (the title Preston masqueraded as) asked the young Hispanic waitress for a “scalded dog” drink to finish off dinner. She returned from the bar and offered a “salty dog”(a real drink). Preston sent her back to get a “scalded dog”, and we left directly to the blue sow (my 1960 dodge pickup) and left the area. Someone was scalded that night.. I was scared to death on that little escapade.
