Bizarre Abortion Bill in Arizona": the
Arizona Capitol Times reports "
Republican lawmaker: Ban abortions sought because of race or sex":
If a state lawmaker has his way, women seeking abortions in Arizona would be required to sign documents saying they're not terminating a pregnancy because of the fetus' race or sex.
Rep. Steve Montenegro, R-Litchfield Park, is sponsoring two bills that would criminalize abortions if they're sought because of race or sex. Doctors knowingly performing abortions for those reasons would face Class 3 felony charges.
Brayton responds:
...I mean, I've heard this ridiculous argument that allowing women to have reproductive choice amounts to genocide because black women have a higher rate of abortion than white women. But even if one believes that moronic argument, do they think that black women are aborting their babies because those babies are black? WTF?
Or do they think that women are having sex with men of another race, getting pregnant and then aborting the baby because they're racist? This is simply bizarre.
and regarding the poor and abortion clinics:
Poor women have far lower access not just to abortion but to family planning services, STD testing, birth control, pre- and post-natal care and nearly every other kind of medical care. Why do family planning clinics try to target lower income areas? Because that's where the need is.
Meanwhile, where's the bill where Jan Brewer had to sign an acknowledgment that SB 1070 and the ethnic studies class ban were not based on racist motives? Oh, this Montenegro guy
introduced the ethnic studies bill and is himself a Latin American immigrant.
