6. Funny But Sad

I have to comment again on this cartoon. It is funny, but in a sad way. Women are not incubators. Unless we have control over our own bodies we will be second class citizens. This "personhood movement" is, in my opinion, nothing but another pathetic attempt to keep women in their place. We are not "host entities" but real people with real issues and feelings. At the ripe old age of 53, it will not be a personal issue for me but it is and will be for millions of women. That is one of the reasons I generally support Democrats and will be supporting Obama in 2012. The Republicans and their Tea party supporters would like nothing more than to make abortion illegal. I can hardly believe this debate is still going on in the year of 2011. Young women need access to education, birth control and, yes, abortion services. My college-age daughter and I participated in the "Summer Of Choice" here in Maryland and I was so glad to see so many of her friends involved. It seems a trite slogan but - My Body, My Choice - is so true.

7. On The Same Subject...

I was once married and played the role, and liked it, of white, middle-class suburban wife and mother with a career as a nurse. My ex, who had previously been rather non-political, somehow became a Limbaugh fanatic and started parroting everything the idiot said. At first it was just annoying, then embarrassing, then impossible to take. I had always leaned to the left but kept my views to myself, kept my mouth shut, attended Catholic mass every Sunday and nodded in agreement. The problems started in 2000 when I supported Gore in the election. How dare I! It got worse after the start of the Iraq war, which I totally opposed. He started to become almost a caricature of a right wing Nazi and I had finally had it. When he and his parents were praising Bush on Thanksgiving I told them I think he stole the election and sucks. I slapped a big peace symbol on the back of my minivan and you would think I had committed murder, the way he acted. Things finally came to a head when my friends invited me to the 2004 March For Wommen's Lives. I was forbidden to go but went anyway. It was such a great experience and I actually came home a changed person. No more mass on Sunday for me, I'm pro-choice, hubby - deal with it. The hypocrite wasn't particularly opposed to birth control! I'm wearing jeans and sandals and shirts I feel comfortable in and not dressing up as your doll. I will not be a closet smoker anymore but will smoke my cigarettes when I feel like it, whether your family likes it or not. I became more vocally anti-war and pro-choice and he divorced me. The whole experience taught the hard way that "pro-life" is a hypocritic lie and that these right wingers don't put there money where there mouth is. He did everything he could to avoid paying child support and I put my daughter through school myself. I am single, happy and living with my daughter, who is also a committed pro-choice ad anti-war activist. We are both into the "Occupy" movement.
