For some controversial subjects, should there be a moderator in the classroom?
When and why does expert knowledge endow someone with whatever it takes to be a good moderator?

For example, when an expert witness begins testifying in court, the judge doesn't step outside to wait. The judge is the moderator and remains the moderator.

1. Are essays inherently controversial?
It is said that an essay thesis must be such that it is impossible to either prove that the thesis is true or prove that the thesis is false.
