A school garden to teach children + article
Hi everyone,
I wasn't sure whether to place this into health or education, so I picked education. I'm linking to an article that recently appeared in my town's paper. It is about a school that created a garden, and teaches the children about gardening. The produce is sold in the farmer's market and at our local health food store, The Merc. They are planning to add a second garden eventually to use in the school and feed their school kids with.

Sprouting Interest article

Hope you enjoy!

1. Nice.
I used to garden with my 2nd and 3rd graders, when I taught those ages, and when I taught 1000 miles south of here where there was an actual growing season during the school year.

We did a lot of indoor gardening during the fall and winter, and moved outside in the spring. We did math, science, and a great deal of reading and writing to go along with our garden. We harvested and ate our own produce, although we didn't produce enough to go beyond some nice classroom feasts. We kept a worm bin to provide compost for our garden, which also provided more opportunities for math, science, reading, and writing.

A teacher at that same school, a special ed teacher with a class of 7th and 8th graders, kept a bigger garden. His class gardened and sold produce to fund raise many of their community experiences, and they donated some to local food shelters.

Gardening is a wonderful school activity.

2. Our public Montessori does this.
It's been great. The community members who work the garden have a great time with the kids coming over. They have 8 plots now.
