KC school board should consider ceding control, Missouri education chief says
Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro has asked the Kansas City school board to consider giving up control of the district Jan. 1.

Nicastro raised the possibility last week in a closed-door meeting with the board. She provided a draft resolution that, if the board voted to take that action, would cede control of the district to a not-yet-created special administrative board.

People at the meeting, who asked to remain anonymous, said Nicastro’s proposal took board members by surprise. They said Nicastro advised the board members that if they did not step aside voluntarily Jan. 1, they risked being forced off.

Nicastro said Monday that she simply wants the board to be aware of its options.

1. KC School Board Member: State Has No Plan To Run KC Schools
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- School Board member Arthur Benson said that if Missouri wants to take over the Kansas City, Mo., School District immediately, he would like to see its plan.

"We have seen nothing from the state that they have a better plan than ours," Benson told KMBC's Micheal Mahoney.

Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro reportedly asked the school board to consider yielding control as early as next year. The school board was handed a pre-written resolution agreeing that the board will stop governing its schools on Jan. 1.

"I thought it was strange when Nicastro handed us the resolution and asked us to cede our authority to the state," Benson said.

2. There is no one on the KCMO school board that has any experience
in administration or in the classroom in the school system.
