Gap programs

Not sure where to post this question....

I have a 17 year old son whom I strongly think should take a gap year or gap six months before attending college (he graduates in 2009). I really want him to experience how the rest of the world lives, give back, and maybe do some soul searching along the way about what he wants to do with his life. He isn't an exceptional student, but carries a 3.0 gpa and is a championship HS swimmer. Within the US is okay, although Mexico or Central America would be cool(he would like Australia). As a family we have never had a chance to travel outside the US. We don't belong to a church, so that kind of group is out, but I've been researching programs on the internet. Our budget isn't great, I found one program that only wanted $35,000! But, I probably could swing $5000 + or - for a 3-9 month program out of his college fund. Does anyone have an opinion on these programs or other programs, good or bad? Advice on figuring out who is reputable? Other forums I could post the question?

1. Americorps VISTA

I am the Executive Director of a small non profit that serves a community in South Carolina identified as the most environmentally, economically and socially distressed community within the state. They have no running water or sewer. No bathrooms no showers.

We have had a VISTA with us - and I will tell you the experience that they gain is tremendous. Also I believe from experience it has helped them gain vision with where they would like to go in the future. The Americorps VISTA program is aimed at post bachelors - and so we have many that will then go on to grad school.

Have had friends in CityYear - only concern is lack of focus in programming or commitment by participants.

Not sure where you are located but there are also other opportunities like the CCC California Conservation Corps and such. Good luck!

2. There is no doubt that

there is plenty of need in the US and frankly, I don't care where he goes in that sense, just so that it is a reputable program and he is reasonably safe.

Does Americorps have any shorter programs (less than a full year) or post high-school opportunities that you are aware of?

3. City Year is a post high school program

And it is an Americorps program - You should probably look more into that. I guess my friend's experience with CityYear should not overly generalize every program.

What about foreign exchange? I remember I did foreign academic exchange with American Field Studies (AFS) my senior year in high school - and really because I did not need the academic credit, I spent most of my time in a volunteer organization when I was living in Honduras.

Not sure if you are or would approve of any religous service organization. Our State's Methodist group has a Summer Internship Program where they provide housing and a small stipend - my organization www.aplaceforhope.org will be gaining a volunteer from this program as well this summer.
