Bob Barr: The Defense Of Marriage Act Must Go
I just saw it on the homepage of the Los Angeles Times under the Opinion section. When I clicked on the link, the story wasn't there. I looked closer at the link and saw that it had a date of January 5.

I wish I had taken a screen capture, but I didn't, and now the headline is gone.

This is the link: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-barr5-2009jan05,0,1855836.story

Considering that Barr was the author of DOMA, I think this is going to make pretty big news. Do you agree?

1. Where is the smiley for my jaw hitting the floor in shock?
:wow:

That would be simply amazing. I cannot imagine that being true though. Maybe, it was a mix-up. Then again, Bob Barr has become more of a Libertarian in his views as of late. My guess is anything could happen at this point.

2. Just saw that it's not really "new" news
He said it back in May:

Still, publishing a new opinion in the L.A. Times would be great to see.

3. Even he could see that it violated the right wings, "states rights" pose.

>>Same-sex marriage
Barr took a lead in legislative debate concerning same-sex marriage. He authored and sponsored the Defense of Marriage Act, a law enacted in 1996 which states that only marriages that are between a man and a woman can be federally recognized, and individual states may choose not to recognize a same-sex marriage performed in another state.<52> At the 2008 Libertarian National Convention, he apologized for the part of the Defense of Marriage Act which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.<53>

He now opposes the Federal Marriage Amendment, contending it is a violation of states' rights.<54><<

On edit: Just found this:

>> "Make no mistake, I do not support gay marriages," he said in a 2003 interview. "But I also am a firm believer that the Constitution is no place for forcing social policies on states..." - Bob "DOMA author" Barr, trolling for libertarian votes.

BARR: "The issue of marriage is a social issue that ought to be left up to the people of the states. And if, in fact, the people of a state—California, Massachusetts, other states—decide they wish to broaden the recognition and the definition of marriage or do away with it entirely, that’s up to the citizens of that state." Q: "But you were a fierce proponent of the—supporter of, originator of the Defense of Marriage Act." BARR: "And the Defense of Marriage Act still stands for, I think, a very valid proposition, in that it protects each state’s ability and decision-making in the area of marriage. It protects any state from having a different definition of marriage forced on it from another state. It essentially protects the ability of each state to practice federalism." <<

5. Yup. In his bid for the Libertarian party as Presidential Nominee
he had to back down on federal interference with States rights.

That's the irony of right wing hypocrisy they want strict interpretation of the Constitution, except when it suits them to push for an amendment to the Constitution codifying marriage as between one m + one f.

They claim they want to protect State's rights, when it suits them, except when it came to DOMA.

Sort of like the strict fundamental reading of Leviticus, except when it suits them. :eyes:

10. Here it is! It's finally been posted!
Wedding blues

The author of the federal Defense of Marriage Act now thinks it’s time for his law to get the boot – but for political reasons, not in support of gays.

By Bob Barr
January 05, 2009 in print edition A-13

In 1996, as a freshman member of the House of Representatives, I wrote the Defense of Marriage Act, better known by its shorthand acronym, DOMA, than its legal title. The law has been a flash-point for those arguing for or against same-sex marriage ever since President Clinton signed it into law. Even President-elect Barack Obama has grappled with its language, meaning and impact.

I can sympathize with the incoming commander in chief. And, after long and careful consideration, I have come to agree with him that the law should be repealed.
