McCoy introduces gender neutral marriage legislation in Iowa

Openly gay Iowa state Sen. Matt McCoy introduced legislation that would make civil marriages in Iowa gender neutral. The “Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act” would omit words like “husband” and “wife” and insert the word “spouse.”

McCoy will take action on the bill when and if the Iowa Supreme Court upholds a district court judge’s decision and marriage equality becomes legal in the state.

McCoy told Radio Iowa: “I think it’s a good bill and it’s something that shouldn’t be controversial. We should just be thinking about how this is all going to work once Iowa becomes a Mecca for gay marriage.”
