A very chilling statement
http://www.pamshouseblend.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=9888

Imagine being this kid

In a high school English class, I was partnered up on a Canterbury Tales assignment with a friend and classmate who decided to confide in me two things: first, that he was glad that I was his group partner, and second, that I was welcome to join him and a few other guys who were planning on beating up and maybe stabbing the only openly gay guy at our school, if he showed up to prom with a date. And I have to wonder if this semester-long friend of mine would have come up with such hateful plan, if he knew he was already friends with a gay guy?

end of quote

I just can't imagine.

1. Can you imagine being the kid that the bashers were targetting.
:(

What kind of school year has he survived? Did he survive? I sure as hell hope this got reported, and those bashers ended up in jail for planning a murder.

2. Maybe we do have further to go than I had hoped.
Being gay doesn't make kids depressed being the object of hatred sure does.

3. Hopefully this kid has by now realized that gay people are everywhere.
And he can't go around beating on one openly gay guy at school

when there are others who he doesn't realize are standing right next to him.

There's power in numbers.

But I'd like to know what you said to this bully about his planned beating.

I hope you didn't just pass it off and not let him know that you were gay.

That might have stopped him in his tracks.

4. If you follow the link you will realize it isn't my quote
I have no idea what that kid did or didn't do. I hope he said something but I am betting he didn't though I have no real idea.

6. Yes!

"It hurts knowing I have to do something most students never even think about, but every time I hear
"that's so gay" and a teacher does nothing about it, it's a terrifying confirmation that I'm on my own,
without protection, as soon as I get out of my mothers reach.

Kate, as a substitute teacher (7-12) I've been spoken to because I DO SOMETHING
about this every time I hear it.
I've been told, " you need to pick your battles"" don't make a big
deal of this" and other "tips" I already known
and practice-( no shit, Sherlock)

This is a battle to NOT allow hate speech in the classroom, including the
ever present phrases,

"that's so gay" and
"that's so retarded"

It is a BFD and I for one will not allow it in any classroom I teach and I get lots of shit
for making a BFD out of it!

My heart goes out to this young lady and the millions around the world who are dealing
with this everyday. I personally know from my own experiences as a child and as a teacher
just how cruel some kids can be.
