We're working hard to get same-gender marriage passed in New Jersey before the end of 2009. During his speech at Garden State Equality's Legends Dinner on February 28th, Governor Corzine once again pledged to sign a Marriage Equality bill. Though the Governor has long said he’ll sign a bill, he went further at the Legends Dinner by saying point-blank: “I’m a Democrat and I’m straight and I believe in marriage equality.” Dick Codey, the Senate President, is also a strong marriage equality supporter. But we still don't have enough support from our Legislature.
Right now, we have enough votes in the Assembly (41), but we need 21 votes in the Senate. We currently have about 18 or 19 votes, and some of them are soft supporters.
On Sunday, March 22nd from 2-5pm, we'll be writing letters, calling our Legislators and brainstorming on what we can do as a community to put more pressure on the Legislature.
If you live in New Jersey or have family, friends or know of marriage equality supporters that live in New Jersey, please encourage them to come join us on Sunday at our third Action Fair.
Location:
United Methodist Church 247 Broad Street Red Bank, NJ 07701
Even if you can't make it this Sunday, we have many more events planned, so don't hesitate to contact me if you're interested in volunteering or attending other events.
