Reconsidered! NH House passes gay marriage

After two days of debating, the New Hampshire House voted for gay marriage 186 to 179 after first voting against it, 183 to 182.

The first vote against equal marriage was so close that a representative asked for it to be reconsidered. After a few minutes of intense personal lobbying on the floor, it passed.

Bills can only be reconsidered once, so the new vote is final.

The debate was ferocious, with Rep. Terie Norelli pleading with the anti-marriage contingent that it was against his religion to NOT solemnize gay marriage. “The state of New Hampshire should not have the right to impose your religious beliefs on my family and my church,” he said.

Norelli said that he has a cousin who is a lesbian, and a choir director at a church.

3. Do read the article again, please.
Terie Norelli (who despite the article is in fact a woman) said that her church doesn't allow her to NOT solemnize same-sex marriages, and that the state shouldn't legislate that one religion that doesn't permit them is no better than another religion that does.

5. atta girl
This is the response we need to the religious argument if one takes that path.

My religion says I can't NOT be married to the person I love.

7. Exactly!
And I'm very glad to see it picking up in use. I've been very non-religious since leaving the RCC as I am a lesbian and it's not very friendly to my kind there. But I am thinking of checking out some of the UCC churches in the area (there are a lot in the Portland area) because of their inclusive views.

And of course... this is a great victory! :woohoo: NH, show me why you call yourself the 'Live Free or Die' state and pass this!
