NY Archbishop: Would ‘defend’ gay rights, not marriage
(New York City) New York Archbishop-designate Timothy Dolan said Monday, on the eve of his installation, that he will challenge the idea that the Roman Catholic Church is unenlightened because it opposes gay marriage and abortion.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, Dolan said he wants to restore pride in being Catholic, especially given the damage the church endured in the clergy sex abuse scandal, which he called a continuing source of shame.
“One would hope that through education and through the joy that we give by our lives that people will begin to see that these fears and this skepticism we have about the church are unwarranted,” Dolan said.
He said Catholics also must defend themselves against bias, which he said was still deeply ingrained in American culture.
“Periodically, we Catholics have to stand up and say, `Enough,’” he said. “The church as a whole still calls out to what is noble in us.”

Anti-Gay Archbishop for New York

It is hardly news, but Pope Benedict XVI has named an anti-gay leader, Timothy Dolan, currently archbishop of Milwaukee, to be the new archbishop of New York when Edward Egan steps down on April 15.
Dolan was praised by the right-wing Catholic League for standing up to the Miller Brewing Company for its sponsorship of the gay Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco, which the League said included "anti-Catholic incidents." Miller, a Milwaukee-based company, agreed to end its sponsorship under the pressure.
When American bishops addressed the child sexual abuse crisis in 2004, the New York Times reported that "he agreed that gay candidates
should be scrutinized more carefully than heterosexual candidates. 'I would think there would be added temptations to the fruitful living of one's chastity,' Archbishop Dolan said."
Dolan supported a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage that passed in 2006 in Wisconsin. It was opposed by 140 of his priests, about one-fifth of the total answerable him.
