Lowenstein: Meghan McCain has a pro-gay message for the GOP
Emma wrote earlier this month about how Meghan McCain has some interesting beliefs for a Republican. She’s pretty much pro-gay, pro-choice, and anti-old-white-guys-being-in-charge-of-everything. All those things make me pretty pro-Meghan. (Her Twitter feed doesn’t hurt, either. A friend of mine tweeted today that Meghan is one of nicest and least-snarky people on the social network seemingly designed for snarky sound bites. It makes her stand out.)
Well Meghan’s commitment to being a generally nice person seemingly extends to her political beliefs, as well. Not content simply to say that the Republican party should be a little less anti-gay, she staked out an argument on gay marriage at the Daily Beast today that positions her somewhere to the left of most Democratic elected officials.
Pointing to her generation, her love for her gay friends, and the actions taken by then Governor Ronald Reagan during the Prop 6 fight of the Harvey Milk era, Meghan McCain argues that the way forward for the Republican Party is a path of inclusion and acceptance and a return to that central belief of Republicanism that people should be able to make decisions for themselves, including decisions about who and how to love.
