Sorrow, shock, repulsion and shame over what happened today.
Edited on Tue May-26-09 05:18 PM by Mike 03
I just wish to add my voice to the ocean of voices who are similarly stupefied (to put it politely) by what happened today in California. My heart goes out to my GLBT brothers and sisters, and there is NO WAY this ruling will stand. It is wrong on so many levels, and it is only a matter of time until this shame is behind us.

We will keep fighting, and fighting with you. There's no going back, because right is right.

This seemed to me like it would be a slam dunk, legally and otherwise; the Atty General and Governor of the state urged that Prop 8 be promptly reversed and relegated to the scrap heap of unlawful propositions.

It's so shocking to see California--where I grew up and was educated and worked for a decade, and once famous for being a progressive state--so shamefully antiquated on the issue of basic rights for a minority group.

It's beyond shameful. Words fail me.

The fight is not over, and you have a sea of supporters out here willing to contribute in any and all ways to remedy this preposterous failure of justice.

EDIT for clarity of emotion and typos.

1. It was not a total loss
The existing marriages were not only "grandfathered" in, but by a unanimous decision. Even the four California justices who opposed equal marriage when the original decision came down about a year ago were willing to abide by the judicial acts of that body when there was a dissent. That helps constitute "precedence". It's an important thing that other courts will consider when faced with the same dilemma in the future, if that happens.

I did not expect this decision to be a slam dunk in terms of its outcome for our side, but I did expect the original Prop 8 vote to be a slam dunk for marriage equality. That surprised me much more than today's decision. Work needs to be done to change the hearts and minds of people who feel irrationally threatened by equal marriage. Railroading over them will just stiffen resistance.

2. I'm not shocked at all.
I was pretty sure they were going to uphold it.

3. It's just amazing to me...

that the same demographic that overwhelmingly supports torture believes they have the moral authority to decide who does and does not get to marry. It's fucking mindboggling, really.
