Anti-gay marriage group eyes Maine gov’s race
Anti-gay marriage group eyes Maine gov’s race
By The Associated Press
12.09.2009 1:11pm EST

(Augusta, Maine) A group that helped to defeat Maine’s gay marriage law in November’s referendum wants to play a role in next year’s gubernatorial and legislative races.

The National Organization for Marriage wants to publicize how candidates voted on Maine’s same-sex marriage law earlier this year before it was rejected by voters.

The New Jersey-based group challened in federal court a Maine law that would require it to file as a political action committee if it spends money on candidate races. NOM’s filing last week asks that it not be subjected to state laws requiring financial disclosures from its contributors.

NOM claims spending limits on campaigns are unconstitutional.

Supporters of a gay marriage say Mainers don’t like to be told how to vote by out-of-state organizations.

2. I bet this'll backfire more then it helps their cause
How can you run an antigay marriage campaign while endorsing a candidate and not leave the guy you're supporting looking like an intolerant bigot?

The fact is polls show a majority of Mainers support gay marriage, but in an election year that's usually low turnout, with ballot initiatives as the main thing to turn people out to vote, the bigots were just more motivated to vote, so good people (the gay marriage supporters who didn't vote) in effect let evil win out for the day. A governor's race is different, lots of people will turn out for that alone, including a lot of the gay marriage supporters who didn't vote last time. And when it comes to running against a state legislator, come on, most people can't even name who their representatives in the state legislature are, the only thing they have to worry about is national/state trends generally, unless there's a primary challenge against them maybe.
