My happy happy company has sent out letters saying that they are auditing dependent coverage for insurance and if you live in a state that has a legal process for domestic partnership registration, you have to register to have your same-sex partner included in your insurance.

What a fucking pain in the ass.

1. do what they want
and be glad you have this option available to you.

When I was still working in the 1970s I damn near LOST MY JOB because I was living with a member of the opposite sex!

2. We are filing the paperwork Monday (have to visit a notary first).
I just wonder how long it takes for them to register.

most bureaucratic paperwork takes awhile to make it through the system has been my experience.

However, it might be retroactive to the date of the Notary's seal (?).

Call them up and ask them. I would!

4. Your answers are here
http://www.sos.wa.gov/corps/domesticpartnerships/faq.aspx

This is the same office that registers corporations, business partnerships, and limited liability companies, I'm sure the process will take no longer for you than it would for them. The WA Secretary of State's office is located in fairly progressive Olympia, WA, I doubt you would find anyone in their office putting your papers in the bottom of the pile.

Yes, it's a pain in the ass. So is filing the paperwork to get married. As someone above put it, be glad that you have this option, and that the only state to approve domestic partnership at the ballot box is Washington State.

5. A Bigger PITA...
is having your spouse work for a company that does not have to cover their spouse because the state has neither marriage nor domestic partnerships/civil unions. However 6-8 weeks sounds about right.

7. It's a pain in the ass because I'll have to drop his coverage until the paperwork comes through.
And if anything happens to him in the interim, we'll end up in bankruptcy.

Think before you judge.

8. Good news...
My partner and I filled mailed the paperwork to Olympia on Saturday, December 5 and had our cards and certificates by Wednesday, December 9. The official date on our certificate was December 7. Quick and easy.:hi:

9. Thank you. With luck that means I won't have to worry over any coverage gap.
