Laura Bush: It Wasn't My Responsibility To Defend Gays From The GOP
Laura Bush: It Wasn't My Responsibility To Defend Gays From The GOP

Speaking to the Texas Tribune, former First Lady Laura Bush said that even though she fully supports LGBT rights, she never spoke up during her husband's anti-gay campaigns. Because he was elected, not her.

TT: Let’s talk a little bit about that responsibility. You found yourself back in the headlines not so long ago for taking positions on gay marriage and abortion that appeared to be at odds with your husband and with the GOP. What do you say to the critics who argue you had a responsibility to come forward sooner, or who suggest you maybe hid those opinions from view?

Bush: Well, I didn’t hide them from view. They were very well known from the first day George was elected, when Katie Couric asked me the question. I’m not elected. I was not elected. George is. He’s the one who’s elected. I was not the elected official. It was not my responsibility, I didn’t think, to speak out in ways to get in some sort of debate with him. I just didn’t see that as part of my role.

1. If an opinion changes by learning, or gaining of courage.
Then that says a person is getting stronger.

5. Long before Bush II ran for president, he appeared on Larry King's show
and stated that gay marriage was a state issue. Then he turned face when it was politically advantageous. I hope that Laura Bush called her husband out on that when they were alone in the presidential quarters of the White House.

Laura Bush is a Methodist. Her daughters were raised as Methodists. I suspect that they are much more liberal many social issues than George W. Bush. It is a shame that Laura Bush was just the presidential spouse and did not have more say in policy.

8. Hmm
While I didn't expect her to speak out publicly against here husband, I wonder if they debated it privately?

12. HORSESHIT! She felt it HER responsibility to let Rove book her on LKL the night Chris Reeves died
Edited on Fri Oct-15-10 05:05 PM by blm
knowing full well that LKL would have dedicated that entire evening talking to family and friends of Reeves, including John Kerry who was the Dem nominee then, and that stem stell research would also be discussed.

Well, for the first time in EVER, King doesn't do a show on a famous person who died that day as he suddenly was given an opportunity to have Laura Bush on for the whole hour - and YES she spoke out AGAINST stem cell research.

She is a LYING WHORE for the Bush family. As they ALL are.

13. What do you expect from a woman who married George W. Bush?
I think of women like Eleanor Roosevelt and there is no comparison. Laura, women like you insult me with your mealy mouthed excuses for your inaction and your cowardice.

14. Correction there Pickles
Your husband was NOT elected - he was selected. But then you and your big mouth Mother-in-Law were always able to block out inconvenient facts. Laura Bush stood for nothing as First Lady. I think her meds and her marriage have rendered her emotionally dead. Hey Babe - you picked him!! Thankfully we now have a First Lady who is not afraid to speak up and tackle some issues - like childhood obesity. Who would not agree that this is a problem and yet she gets criticism from the right for this non-controversial issue. I am really liking Michele and hope she stays active and visible. Laura, shame on you for squandering your opportunity to speak out on, well, anything.
