iPhone Launches "Peek-A-Boo Tranny" App

Apple has allowed the launch of a new app that "hilariously" inserts a "tranny" into photos, ostensibly for the purpose of shaming your friends. Bil Browning reacts at Bilerico:

Not only is the whole premise offensive - especially the name - but Apple is notorious for being prudish about the apps it approves for sale in its App Store. This one made it through the process but a dictionary was blocked temporarily for including definitions for curse words and they still mark most LGBT apps as "contain age-restricted material" that requires you to put in your password to "prove" you're over the age of 17. What's next now that Apple's standards department is okay with stereotypes and slurs? I smell Peekaboo Wetback! It'll insert a Mexican man wearing a sombrero and holding a burrito!

...this is going to keep happening. If they approve it, they own it.

2. Just went to the Apple App store. Sorry THERE IS NO SUCH APP.

If it ever was there, it appears that it has been yanked.

Or maybe it was a hoax, I don't know.

But nonetheless there is no such app for sale at the App Store.

3. There's 42 peekaboo apps for iPhone.

In all types of spelling for it. They're all toddler diversions. Not one is adult, much less Tranny.

There are 6 peekaboo iPad apps. only one is adult. an Atari Breakout game that has beautiful women behind the walls... but they're not trannies.

Don't know what JMG is talking about. Maybe it's a jailbroken off brand app.

5. All I can say is if it was in the official app store, it's gone now.

So it looks like they listen to complaints and take offenses seriously. It was less than a day since your link was posted and it's not in the store Today.

9. If you have iTunes, click on the link.

it takes you to the iTunes app store. An alert pops up and says "This item cannot be found".

They took it down in one day. If only Target and Amazon were so proactive.

Besides, those aren't transgender people. They are drag queens. The app is misnamed. I doubt many people would have a problem with a drag queen in your photo app. iPhones have shitty cameras anyway. I have one that puts Silent Bob in the shot.

12. I also like how it's "over 17" but the transgender person is completely and modestly clothed.

Because transfolks' very existence is x-rated and obscene. It sickens me the way the straight world turns all transpeople into sex and shame, which becomes self-fulfilling as young, working class transwomen are unable to obtain employment and must turn to sex work to survive.

This app isn't just offensive, to me it's tragic.
