CA Psychiatrist: We Need To Protect Kids From Being Exposed To LGBT People
from Equality Matters

Last week, the California Senate Judiciary Committee narrowly http://www.lgbtpov.com/2011/04/fair-education-act-and-gender-nondiscrimination-act-pass-key-california-legislative-committees/">voted to advance the FAIR Education Act (SB 48), a bill that would require state schools incorporate into their curriculum, the contributions of LGBT Americans to development of California and the U.S.

Before the bill’s approval however, the committee held a hearing on the bill, during which psychiatrist Miriam Grossman warned the committee members that talking about transgender people could “frighten” young children.

Grossman, who has written http://www.amazon.com/Unprotected-Miriam-Grossman/dp/1595230459/ref=pd_sim_b_1">several http://www.amazon.com/Youre-Teaching-Child-What-Physician/dp/1596985542/ref=pd_sim_b_1">books about the dangers of “safer sex” culture, actually offers some incredibly insightful testimony about the objectives of anti-gay conservatives:

This bill mandates the introduction of ideas into the classroom without considering the capacity of students to grasp and absorb these ideas.

The “ideas” she’s referring to, of course, are that gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people are real human beings who contribute to society and exist everywhere. Indeed, Grossman even goes so far as to assert that “there is no age-appropriate way” to teach children about the existence of transgender people in American society.

1. i'm wondering if she's a friend to women's rights after listening to her 'concerns' --
and boy does she lay it on thick.

2. We need to protect children from crackpot people pretending to be doctors
That is the real danger here.

3. When information actually changes minds, stifle the message
When some of the most conservative minds are changed once they realize glbt people are just people:

The only thing they can do is kill the messenger, or stifle the message.

4. I grew up with gay friends of my mom
So I have never viewed it as a big deal. A friend of mine in High School died of AIDS (I never really knew he was gay until after he was dead). I have tried to instill the concept of tolerance in my children, but they have negative thoughts from their friends. The interesting thing is that 25 out of 27 kids in my daughter's Gifted Class saw no issue with homosexual marriage. This is in a very conservative community. I suspect in about 10 years that gays will have full legal rights in the country.

5. Can the American Psychiatry Association either revoke her license to practice medicine, or
censure her in some way, since she what she is saying is in direct contradiction to what all American professional mental health counselor associations teach.

And that seems like malpractice to me.

6. She's an idiot with no understanding of adolescent psychology.
I've seen too many, usually Psychiatric MDs, with their heads so far up their ass they can bite their larynx.

This is one of them. The point of introducing children to new ideas is to grant them the capacity to understand new things.

This stupid twit projects her own fears on children who would otherwise simply take it in stride. Her bona-fides aren't worth the paper they're printed on, and I'd happily tell that to her face.

8. What a quack. Transgendered people are among the least frightening people I know.
They are in my experience positively wonderful.

10. And, oddly... not terribly 'different' from anyone else.
With the possible exception of having a strong sense of self, TG people are perfectly 'normal' as I have seen. I've never found that 'parts'='person', and those few that I've known certainly transcend the physical.

9. Stupid, stupid or bigoted, bigoted.
The main reason I'm not homophobic (I think and hope) is that I had gay friends, that I knew were gay, when I was a kid.

11. I think that's exactly what the bigots are afraid of! And it is fear.
They have a terrible fear that other people might be accepted and treated as regular human beings and then where will we be????? Why God might punish us by not letting the sun come up tomorrow morning????

Fear is motivating a lot of anti-gay bigotry - not fear of gay people, but fear of what would happen if gay people were accepted. And the fear-mongers know that acceptance begins in childhood.
