I am going to say something that I don't want anyone to take personally, but which I believe honestly:

Sometimes, I wish I had more gay friends, but I find many in the gay community to behave - in person - much as some of them behave here - dramatic, self-important, condescending, just basically anti-social, which makes a certain sense in terms of when you consider how society shits on gay people, they adapt, and in turn, become anti-social.

But personally, I don't see how that's healthy or productive, in any way. There was another member here in GLBT who was banned, and while I don't know what specific post or exchange which got her banned, I do recall a thread in this forum where I posted something innocently, and she took it to mean the worst possible thing imaginable, and snipped and snipped and sniped and I eventually just put her on ignore - what is the point of engaging with someone who is clearly mentally ill even if she is One Of Us?

Anyone who knows any of my posts knows I'm not perfect, but I am very liberal and I've been on DU for a number of years, and despite that, someone yesterday implied that I was a closet Republican. :wtf: :eyes:

I guess the short of this is, it's just sad that people don't know what the "Discussion" means in "Discussion Board" and don't know how to talk with other people.

So going back to your opening post, I think it was sweet, and cheers to you. Over time, some may return, some may not, and if not, it may not be because Skinner didn't remedy the board, but for other reasons. :hi:

You've expressed how I've felt about this place for the past few years. Without going into further detail, it would be a welcome change if some people take to heart what you've just shared.

There were a lot of things I wanted to say in Skinner's thread, but figured it would have been a waste of my time. People would rather twist words or misconstrue intent, instead of asking for some clarification.

It's funny, though, that there are posters who are unwilling to acknowledge the role they played in creating frictions on this board with their divisiveness, while at the same time acting like the biggest victims on the planet.

28. Happened again this past weekend, as a matter of fact.

I'm out at one of my watering holes, trying to have a good time, but minding my own business, and this 50-something guy starts chatting me up - I'm not interested in dating him, but I've seen him around, so we talk. He's pretty typical, spent a life as a gay man not very dissimilar to me. Has traveled, lived abroad, comes from the same general region as I do.

Then, he starts calling me fat. Pointing out things he feels are flawed about my appearance. Goes on and on. And on. I mean, I've personally never felt compelled to insult people I just meet, but maybe I'm weird that way...?

:eyes: I used to have a cardinal rule about meeting guys - if you don't want to date them, don't waste your time. Think I need to re-adopt it.
