Neil Patrick Harris apologizes for using the word ‘tranny’
http://lgbtweekly.com/2011/12/05/neil-patrick-harris-apologizes-for-using-the-word-%E2%80%98tranny%E2%80%99/

After his appearance on Regis and Kelly, How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris has apologized to his fans and the transgender population for using the word ‘tranny’ to describe his voice.

A bit on the show had Ripa and Harris try sulfur hexachloride – which, unlike helium, creates a low-pitched voice. Harris said his voice sounded like Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs followed by, “I’ve never sounded more like a tranny in my life.”

The scene was awkward, but it nevertheless garnered several backlashes from GLAAD and other organizations, though some activists like Dan Savage have taken to Harris’ defense while acknowledging the word was “thoughtless.” Savage has previously gotten heat for his use of the word against the transgender community.

Harris apologized for the use of the word, tweeting:

Truly sorry for saying the word ‘tranny’ on Live this week. Twice! Should have been more thoughtful. Didn’t at all mean to offend.

1. I would have thought...
...he would know better, being gay and knowing how it feels to be discriminated against.

Shame on him!

2. How do those toes taste, Neil?
I agree with #1; a gay man should have known better. Moreover, an actor should understand that words have power either to heal or to hurt. That was not a healing turn of phrase.

3. well....
I accept...I wasn't upset so much...with that word...more concerned about getting shot in the head or beaten to death by haters outside my home....or in a parking lot...or McDonald's...(I don't go to McDonald's so that is a plus...)

6. I never thought of the word as derogatory but I, in deference to my fellow DUers, stopped using it.

My first boyfriend, who was older than me, used to tell me "Don't fuck with a Tra--y, show them respect, because they have had it A LOT harder than you or I." I always remembered that.
