Do
not confuse this uber-rightwingnut so-called law firm, ACLJ, with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). There is absolutely no connection between the two, and they are diametrically opposed in law to each other. Apparently, ACLJ likes to appear similar to ACLU as to name recognition. No surprise since the ACLU has done outstanding legal work for almost a century and is well-known by judges and other members of the Bar for its positive ethics and insightful and articulate legal arguments.
This (below) is a news release from the ACLJ website spewing their own political, legal, and ideological agenda:
ACLJ (American Center for Law and Justice) Fights Efforts by Same-Sex Couples to Redefine Marriage - Brief Filed in CT Case
NEW HAVEN, CONN., Nov. 22, 2005
”Calling marriage one of the most meaningful of human and social institutions, attorneys for the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) are battling a lawsuit in Connecticut that would redefine marriage to include same-sex couples.
The ACLJ today filed an amicus brief with the Superior Court of the judicial district of New Haven, asking the judge to dismiss
Kerrigan v. State of Connecticut, a lawsuit by seven plaintiffs that seeks to grant full legal rights to same-sex couples.
"The
Kerrigan lawsuit claims the idea of marriage between a man and a woman is old fashioned and serves no legitimate purpose, and that the sex of the participants is irrelevant. But that's simply wrong," explained Vincent McCarthy, senior counsel of the ACLJ.
"Their argument is all that's needed for marriage is two individuals who seek an intimate relationship with each other, and their sex doesn't matter. But marriage was not established primarily for mutual gratification. It was always grounded in the interest of the State in regulating the procreation, protection and growth of children and to ensure that they had a mother and father," said McCarthy. "Marriage is one of the most meaningful of human and social institutions because of its link to creating and raising the next generation. The ACLJ will strenuously oppose any attempts to denigrate the definition of marriage."
In addition to the Connecticut case, the ACLJ is currently involved with legal challenges involving the same-sex marriage issue in several other states.
Led by Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, the ACLJ specializes in constitutional law and is based in Washington D.C.
