HRC: Oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment
<Snip>Oppose the Federal Marriage Amendment
Just yesterday we learned that radical right wing groups and their supporters in Congress are gearing up their base for a vote on the so-called Marriage Protection Amendment again in March. Our response must be immediate and loud. Please take a moment to take action right now.
Subject:

Dear Member of Congress,

As your constituent, I urge you to not cosponsor or vote for the so-called "Marriage Protection Amendment," H.J. Res. 39 and S.J. Res. 1, or any amendment to the US Constitution that would write discrimination into the Constitution.

1. THEY SHOULD NOT REFER TO IS AS THE FEDERAL MARRIAGE AMENDMENT
what the fuck is WRONG with the HRC? Don't they know jack shit about framing a political debate?

It's the Federal Discrimination Amendment or the Federal Hate Amendment or the Federal Gay Bashing Amendment

BUT THEY SHOULD NOT BE USING THE LANGUAGE OF RIGHTWING ASSHOLES IN THEIR OWN PRESS RELEASES!

Jeesh!

Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!~

7. Correct. It should be called the Federal Animal Husbandry Amendment
since the ONLY requirement for getting married is that you be of the opposite sex, presumably to procreate.

2. Or ask Christ whether all should be treated equally
I've been considering paying for a half page ad in the local newspaper for an ad. Would Christ discriminate against loving adults in a relationship based on their sex?

3. sometimes I think the reason we get ourselves backed
against the wall so often is that they won't be more creative about their arguments. It seems like we always repeat the same thing, and yes - we SHOULD be more aggressive, and much less defensive. These christo-fascists are among the biggest phonies in this country, and we need to take the fight to them much more often than we do. Instead, we are always playing defense in a struggle which we know by all accounts is truly righteous.

4. Done
I added my own paragraph to the form letter:

If there was real concern about "protecting marriage" there would be a push to end divorce, which destroys at least 50% of all marriages in the United States. Instead the concern is with a discriminatory amendment that seeks only to penalize committed, loving couples who wish to harm nobody.

6. Done a few days ago. Both of my Senators replied.
Both Senators Durbin and Obama will oppose this hateful piece of shit.

If those naive simpletons at the Log Cabin Republicans hacen't gotten the message already, then there's no hope for them whatsoever. This "Marriage Protection Amendment" is the same fucking thing the Senate debated (and voted down) two years ago. This is a major, important plank in the Republican Party agenda. When you have the President of the United States endorsing this every fucking State of the Union address, it's quite clear that they will bring this up again and again and again as long as they are in power. Coupled with the fact that you've got a gay head of the Republican National Committee and the fact that the Vice President of the United States endorses it (and having an openly lesbian daughter, whom presumably he loves) and the whole fucking issue is not only disgusting, obscene and wrong on every single level, it's also fraught with nauseating hypocrisy by the Republicans.
