Victim in Bar Attack Claims Mistreatment
One of the men attacked in a gay bar by a hatchet-wielding teenager filed a complaint with the state alleging paramedics gave him substandard treatment because he is gay.

Robert R. Perry was hit in the head with the hatchet and shot in the back by 18-year-old Jacob D. Robida, who later killed himself during a police chase. Two other men also were injured in the attack early Feb. 2 in Puzzles Lounge.

In a complaint filed with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Perry says the New Bedford paramedics took too long taking him to a hospital, were physically and verbally abusive, and shared private medical information with his family without his permission.

"There wasn't just hatred in the bar that night," said Perry, 52, of Dartmouth. "We had hatred in the ambulance, too."

1. This is disgusting!
Doesn't matter who paramedics pick up, they should act in a compassionate and professional manner.

5. Disgusting but happens all to often...
...by those sworn to protect us or care for us. These paramedics obviously forgot they have a duty of care obligation to abide by.

I work in the security industry here in Australia and even though I am out with the bosses of the company I don't know if I will ever come out to my fellow workers. The security industry here is full of homophobes who love to throw the word "fagot" around all too often, plus numerous racial slurs.

I have called a few guards on it who I have built up a good working relationship with, but my lonely little voice isn't enough to combat just how bigoted this industry truly is. And yes we obligated by a Duty Of Care as well. We serve to protect the general public and those we are hired to protect.

2. why am i not surprised?
he must have been one of those ''extreme gays'' somebody ws complaining about in another thread.:eyes:

i've heard other gay folk complain about treatment in ambulances -- it's scary because it's out of sight of everyone else.

4. It's not just the emotional distress that will get them sued ...
but the sharing of private medical information without permission that will end up costing them a bundle.

There's been a big push in health care about patient confidentiality over the past few years and those who breach such confidentiality can be in really deep doo-doo.
