California Senate approves bill recognizing gays in textbooks

The state Senate Thursday approved a bill to add the contributions of gays in future school social science textbooks.

Under Senate Bill 1437, written by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, schools will be required to adopt age appropriate study of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.

The 22-15 vote to send the bill to the Assembly broke down mainly along party lines, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed. However, Sen. Dean Florez, D-Shafter, voted against the bill and Sens. Denise Ducheny, D-San Diego, and Michael Machado, D-Linden, abstained.

but textbooks used by high schoolers in america are dictated not by the state of California, but by the state of Texas. Because the Texas public school system has the most buying power (out of any state), book makers go to them to write the books that are then made standard for the rest of the country.
