Irish poll: 2/3 support for same-sex marriage!
There is growing support amongst the population for the introduction of same sex marriages, a new survey has revealed.

A survey to be published in tomorrow's Sunday Tribune shows that nearly two thirds of voters here support equality in civil marriage for gays and lesbians .

It is a significant increase on a previous survey conducted just eight months ago.

Andrew Long of the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network is encouraged by the latest findings.

1. The Irish are by and large a very tolerant people
despite the rabid intolerance of the Irish Catholic church and obvious lunatics like Hannity and O'Reilly. We're talking averages here.

I'm not the least bit surprised by this poll.

2. That's awfully cool...
Another reason to be proud of my Celtic heritage.

3. Very impressive and encouraging percentage from a country
that is rich and beautiful and complex and boasts a long string of Nobel literature laureates.

Good for Ireland.

They can write a ballad that makes you weep INSTANTLY. Seriously, nobody writes a better tear-summoning ballad than the Irish.

(BIAS DISCLAIMER: My mother is from Limerick. The town "Angela's Ashes" was based in.)

5. bbernardini, you are so right on this that it hurts.
I'm a folk music addict -- hopelessly untreatably lost in Celtic melodies and harmonies and themes -- and when you praise Ireland for that music, you have summoned the heart of the wilderness.

Thank you.
