Larry The Cable Guy = Pro-Gay?
Angie | Feb 12, 2007 |
I'm sure that many of you all know and love "Pastor" Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church and GodHatesFags.com. I've gotten to see his work (what they call "love crusades") in action at two funerals in my hometown...and it's not to be missed.
In recent years, Phelps and his band-o'-picketers have expanded their repertoire beyond protesting LBGT funerals, and frequently picket military funerals as well.
Now, they've got a new target: Larry The Cable Guy.
(PDF Dociment on Phelps' site)
http://www.godhatesfags.com/fliers/feb2007/20070211_larry-the-cable-guy.pdfThat's right, ladies and gentlemen. Larry The Cable Guy, who gave us big (apparently gay) pearls o' wisdom like "Git-R-Done" has a one-way ticket to Hell, and he's taking all of America with him.
Phelps and his crew are just doing us a favor by telling us. How thoughtful.

From a new Westboro Baptist Church press release:
Which does make a bit of sense, actually, as Satan would seem to be a literal "red neck"! However, this protest is still completely absurd on Westboro's part, as everyone knows the Prince of Darkness is much more of a Jeff Foxworthy fan.

Like it or not, Larry the Cable Guy's comedy may become as symbolic of this decade and the Bush era as Jerry Seinfeld was of the 90s and the Clinton era. You can try to drive through a Bush-voting county without seeing a car bearing a Git-R-Done sticker. You may succeed where I failed.
It's an open secret that Larry's good-ol'-boy schtick is phony. He was born in Nebraska but grew up in West Palm Beach, Florida (Kerry by 21 points). But it's still possible to pick up the heartland patois when you live in urban Florida, right?
Well, here's a video of Larry (ne Daniel Lawrence Whitney) in his first iteration, as a wrist-slashingly bad generic 90s cutup. Watch and writhe - or marvel at a man's ability to reinvent himself and win the heart of a nation.
