1. Are you kidding me? I can remember events that
took place in my life based on certain episodes -- some happy times, some really bad times.

Whenever I hear the song, "Proud," I immediately think of that final episode!!

The last season was intense, ha?

I still miss the show a lot.

4. Hate it
All gay people are perfectly gorgeous, have 11% body fat (if that) with well-defined musculature, no hair below the ears, dress impeccably and are far more screwed up than anyone you will ever know.

That is a helpful image for our community. :eyes:

Yeah, yeah, I know: Television is not reality, not even the "reality" shows. But what is it with American producers taking well done, realistic British soaps and turning them into fantasy visions with absolutely no basis in truth? I have been out and proud for going on 25 years and I have NEVER in all my years known even one person who was so pretty, so petty, so addict-prone and so emotionally messed up as any one of these characters.

Shows like this are why I only watch "Project Runway" and the Weather Channel.

(I am fully aware that I am :banghead: and  so don't bother pointing that out.)

5. In fairness Michael's husband and Emmit
weren't screwed up. Sure they add salacious details, and Pittsburg was never so fun, but it is TV. I will admit to preferring David on Six Feet Under to all of the QAF men though.

6. I thought I was the only one!
I watched the first season and couldn't bare watching anymore than that. Yes I know its a show and it's not real. But that doesn't mean it couldn't represent the LGBT community with a little more reality.

I found the characters shallow, vapid, and a poor representation of what we are really like and about. In essence I got turned off by the show because it was stereo typing our communities worst attributes as being the norm when the clearly are not.

7. The phrase, "shallow as a mud puddle" comes suddenly to mind
And vapid... that was the word I was looking for. :toast:

8. We do have this ..

A hit on the film festival circuit, 'Bear Cub (Cachorro)' is a gay-themed Spanish film that aims to separate itself from the Pedro Almodovar mould. The film explores the 'bear' gay subculture, which focuses more on lasting friendships and realistic body images than the camp, narcissistic physical perfection, or wild partying that characterises some other aspects of gay culture. Pedro is a successful dentist who happens to be homosexual. When his sister arrives at his doorstep with her son Bernardo in tow, Pedro ends up becoming the boy's temporary guardian while she departs for India. Pedro rushes to clean up some of his behaviour and discovers that Bernardo is unaffected by the exposure to his uncle's lifestyle. The two become fast friends, but their comfortable relationship is threatened by Pedro's estranged mother, who has arrived with designs on Bernardo's upbringing - primarily, that the boy should not be raised by a gay man. 'Bear Cub' explores many of the issues confronting the gay community - HIV, homophobia, parenting - while remaining naturalistic in presentation.

I've never seen it, but heard good things, but then it's from other bears ....

3. I watched most of the first two seasons... loved it
I'm kind of burned out on them now. The public library has all of them... I wonder if the fundies are aware of the exotic pleasures that lurk on their public library shelves

I have also enjoyed Six Feet Under and Desperate Housewives.

Talk about your whiny actors.

But I liked "QAF". Especially Emmett...and Peter Paige, who played him. :-)

14. I understand why a lot of LGBT didn't like it
And hell, I wish there were more people of color and they did more with the lesbians on the show, but for what it was it was some good trashy soapy fun. Sure it was ridiculously unrealistic a lot of the time, especially as the show went on, but I still liked it.

I liked how the writers would get snarky on certain elements in the community.

15. My partner and I both loved the first few seasons....eventually he lost interest but
not me. I could never give up a good soap opera with explicit sex. I'm a cheap date.

I will never forget the final episode of the first season. It left me speechless.

17. my favorite series of all time
I was late to QAF, and when I rented the DVD series went through one after another for hours at a time. I really liked how the series tried to represent all points of view, and had a great deal of compassion and empathy for everyone in what they were going through. I thought it was a pretty successful show at dealing with some emotionally charged and complex issues in an intelligent, balanced and sometimes really funny way.

20. My favorite scene
You know what my favorite scene was? It was one of the last episodes in the fifth season after Babylon was bombed and Brian has left Michael at the hospital to recover and when he returns to Babylon he sees Justin still at the scene and finally tells him that he loves him and the two of them melt into each others arms. I know it was really sentimental but that's all Justin had been longing to hear from Brian for all those years, and I teared up when the cynical Brian finally admitted his feelings.

22. I highly recommend that you rent the series
if you have a DVD player. There's something in it for everyone, and hits so many issues over the five seasons that there's a lot that many gay men and lesbians can relate to. I think QAF was really well done, and is one of the more relevant gay entertainment venues out there. Just remember to accept it for what it is: good tv, and not high art.

...site season. It was obnoxiously stupid, and went on forever.

My favorite Debbie T-Shirt... You say Tomato, I say Fuck Off!

26. Loved the first couple seasons
I remember watching the first episode on DVD, and being hooked. Certainly no oscar-winning performances on QAF, but finally a show that was about me and my life. Several of my gay friends did not like the show, said there was too much stereo-typing going on. I think some of the characters were to the extreme, but my best friend led his life much the way Brian Kinney did on QAF. I saw several of my real-life friends in the characters on QAF. The later seasons of the show seemed to go flat for me. IMO, the plot of QAF was about the love story of Brian and Michael. They were the star-crossed lovers destined to never be together. This was played out so well the first couple of seasons, but once the story moved away from this, it lost steam. A good series that I would recommend to those who have not seen it.
