Speakers for and against a proposed state amendment banning gay marriage engaged in a verbal tussle Thursday morning, nearly a week after the proposal gathered enough signatures to be placed in November's ballot.

"It's crucial that we protect marriage and the family by defining as the civil union betwen one man and one woman," said Eladio Jose Armesto, a Spanish-language media publisher who years ago tried to repeal Miami-Dade County's gay-rights amendment.

Armesto was the first speaker in a debate sponsored by Broward General Medical Center and the Tower Forum, an organization that meets once a month in Fort Lauderdale to discuss political and social issues.
