TN Rep. Campfield wants gay references banned in schools
http://knoxnews.com/news/2008/feb/13/rep-campfield-wants-gay-references-banned-schools/

An essay on little Johnny's two mommies could be tossed in the bin before it ever gets the chance to bask in hallway display prominence.

Newly proposed state legislation would ban anything that exposes students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade to homosexuality.

"Homosexuality, bisexuality, that's something that should be left to be taught at home and not at our schools," said Rep. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, author of the legislation.

The bill, however, would allow for the teaching of heterosexuality.

1. Sure. Just as soon as they remove all references from the Bible, too
Along with murders, adultery and incest.

Clean up the Bible first, then we'll talk about what's happening in school.

5. Lazy, thoughtless pandering
So *who* would decide whether a written passage in a classic such as, say, Tom Sawyer, could be interpreted as condoning homosexuality, eh? This clown isn't thinking, but his proposal is squarely aimed at a crowd that abhors thinking.

Just put me in the time machine and shoot me 30 years into the future (no aging, please). This will look as assinine as all the hooey about mixed-race marriages by then.

In the meantime... an entire class of people are subjected to blatant prejudice. God, the STUPIDITY makes my blood boil !!

(My gay younger sister is and always has been terribly precious to me. Me, a middle-aged white, Christian, married-with-children financial executive. With those characteristics - aren't I supposed to be a Republican and hate her, or something?)

6. No Alexander the Great? No Caesars?
No mention of Shakespeare's 'affection' for the subject of the Sonnets? No Sappho? No Stein?

Are we supposed to return to the 'good ol' days' when we dehumanized all history into names, dates and battles and leave out all the essential humanity (not to mention the really good stories) of the history of people? Shall we remove the women too? Go back to Queen Elizabeth, Queen Victoria and Mrs. Washington and let the rest return to obscurity. Can't have girls thinking they're people too...might keep them from being submissive to their husbands! We'll just excise anyone who isn't Male and White...goodbye Frederick Douglass and Sitting Bull...just the way I was taught.

12. Actually, that is the intent: Whig history and superficial "criticism."
There is no room for any alternate analyses in US classrooms until the students get to college, save in very select school districts. A laundry list of dates and names is precisely what is desired, and a canon of selected canon of "non-controversial" literature. "The Clouds" in the marked criticism of religion, where the one character says that Zeus causes the thunder like his stomach rumbling after eating too much from street vendors would not be allowed, not when the other character talks about a scientific explaination for weather phenomena in reply.
For history, the "outline" of God chose Chris Colon who then found a New World inhabited by godless savages, and then the Puritans founded the USA and George Washington was a demigod, alongside Jefferson, Madison, et al. All was fine after the Revolution, then slavery was overthrown in 1865, then all were liberated by Martin King one hundred years later, after the USA singlehandedly defeated Hitler and the Kaiser and Japan in rapid succession. That's it. Throw in some "School House Rock" on how a Bill becomes law and voila, history and civics.
Now shutup and get ready for your next No Child Left Behind standardized test, and read a bowdlerized version of Great Expectations for next week.
Juan, debes que no hablar español en clase hoy dia, solo ingles!

Is it just me, or does this guy have a sixhead? It's like his photo's been retouched by an anime artist...all of his features are squished down into the bottom half of his face...

8. They shouldn't teach entropy in schools either. Disorder should be taught at home.
Edited on Wed Feb-13-08 10:37 PM by Democrats_win
In fact entropy belongs in the closet right next to Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville.
