Sorry, I just don't get Gay/bi Republicans!
I go to another message board where we usually don't discuss politics. I do that here. This is a GLBT message board. Well, a topic was posted about gay republicans and I thought I'd chime in. BIG MISTAKE. SO Many are christian conservatives. First they brought up was how Bill Clinton did nothing for gays and Bush has done more (LOL) for gays than Clinton. (LOL) I'm asking about gay marriage and why so many conservatives are closeted gay men and I swear, they have a answer for everything. I have to be civil because this board has had too many heated debates,so I have to watch my words. The biggest thing that I am having trouble with is they say they have alot of gays in the party so they can change laws. LOL. I asked why REPUBLICANS wish to amend the constitution so gays can't marry and so far, they are staying far and clear from that question.

*sigh* I just needed to vent. I will NEVER understand gay republicans!

1. Follow the MONEY
Two gay men, each with the expectation of an executive level salary, are going to be much more concerned about their taxes than they are about the civil rights of anybody else.

That's where the few of those guys I've known have been at, anyway. It's all money with them. That $200,000/year and up just isn't enough and the wolf is always at the door.

17. I think that's an unfair generalization
You don't really mean that about every well-earning gay male couple do you?

2. It is truly amazing how many people are willing to vote against their own self interests!
I am always stunned by the number of republican campaign signs in yards of working class citizens. Why do so many support a party that clearly isn't looking out for their best interests????

With hope, more and more people are finally realizing that Republicans don't help the middle class, or the poor. OR gays and lesbians, OR the vast majority of people in our country!

3. Because with Republicans
They are offered the assurance that even if they are living in a box under a bridge, the black/Hispanic/queer/whatever person next to them won't have a bigger box.

Most of the guests were Republicans, and had no problem with a lesbian wedding.

12. there's a difference between civility and support
In my experience most Republicans can be very nice about the whole issue on a personal level, even the ones who are otherwise out there actively shoving a knife into our collective back with legal challenges and at the polling booth. When it comes to Rethugs there's a lot of truth to a line i remember from Queer as Folk that went something like, "if they don't despise you to your face, they despise you behind your back."

And as for Log Cabin Repubs and others of their sorry ilk, they have made a choice to trade honesty and equality for material gain or some twisted economic libertarian dream of no taxes and little or no government. And then I think that there are some who actually get off on being a barely tolerated minority. They'd rather be inmate trustees at a prison camp than live as free men and women.

7.  You and Warpy are so right, lionesa
In Socal , there are many, it really woke me up after being in NorCal for 30 years . Gay repubs are as scare as hen's teeth up north. Hell, they had their national convention last time, right here in Palm Springs . They looooove "moderate" wing nut Mary Bono-Mack. Would it be too unkind/sexist to call her "trampy"?

8. I've known a few.
Rich gay men who like low taxes and figure their money can insulate them from bigotry.

Really no more complicated than that.

9. Some people are just idiots
That "change the party from within" notion never made sense to me either. There's no reasoning with people who despise you and do everything in their power to destroy you. That's why I don't get those who want to "work with" the Republicans or "reach out to" homophobes.

10. lol I don't need the disclaimer.
I will NEVER understand republicans, period.

But I do agree with you in that it certainly seems to be allying oneself with one's enemy. Craziness.

13. My partners brother
is a gay republican. He is more concerned about his money than he is his civil rights. He figures as long as he has money the rest will fall into place.

He's a huge McCainiac. He cares more about the conservative issues (free market economy, aggressive/reckless foreign policy, etc) more than he does about gay issues. It can happen.

19. I liken them to the Jews who fed other Jews into the gas chambers at Auschwitz...
...just so they could have another couple of weeks of life before they themselves were gassed. Gay Republicans (like gay Conservatives in Canada) are traitors to their sexuality.
