We decided on ...
Hairspray. None of us thought of that, but the kids did. Not a bad choice actually. Thanks for all the suggestions and we might actually do some of them.

1. Good choice, but....
The original or the musical adapation? PLEASE say it was the original. :-)

2. they decided on the musical but we might do both
We are shooting for a popular movie and they think this is it. This has been a fit and start type of thing and we are trying to boost numbers.

3. Oh god, what a good choice.
It's not explicitly gay but it's hard to not see it in the subtext.

That was the movie of 2007 for me - my kids and I saw it so many times, sang the songs... it's a blast.

Loved it. Probably not the best for kids I guess....but is it really any worse that what you might see on South Park or any myriad of other TV shows?

10. I've only seen the original version
but I don't recall much that was gay about it. The main character was played by a gay man, Divine, although he did not play a gay character and I swear I don't remember any gay characters in the film at all. It preaches tolerance in a way and is admirably anti-racist, but nothing specifically pro-gay.

I assume the musical remake has gay characters in it, and therefore includes gays in the tolerance message? If not, I don't quite see the point. It may be considered by some to be a "gay" movie in some sense, but gay-themed?

Didn't John Travolta star in the remake? The tabloids say he's gay but who knows. In any case, he's in the closet, so not exactly a role model. And scientology, to which he belongs, is virulently homophobic.

So unless there's something in the remake that is very pro-gay, I confess I don't get this choice. Because Travolta wears a dress???

There's got to be a better choice.

13. Agreed - the message of joyful inclusion and societal change makes it an excellent choice.
I'm just a little PO'd that I didn't think of it first.

Between my internal and two externals I've got a terabyte of storage, and something like 12 Gigs free. :P

23. You've got me beat.
I managed to free up an extra 10 gigs on my harddrive, so I've got about 14 or 15 free between my internal and two externals. :P

Although I've only got about half as much storage space as you do to begin with.

I really need to get rid of some of my porn. :P
