Great Hillary pic
I've never seen this one before. It's of Hillary marching in the NY gay pride parade. I am once again reminded of why I adore her.

The reason Hillary supported DOMA, was that it explicitly kept marriage as a STATE issue, not a federal issue. That's exactly how it should be.

26. It's not a 'state' issue when the feds determine who gets my SS survivor benefits...
My beloved and i have been together for 9 years, and we have a son who's almost 8 (biologically hers, but still OURS).

Her sister's husband died unexpectedly a couple of years ago, and their family receives Social Security survivors' benefits to help make ends meet since their loss.

My spouse is a SAHM due to health issues that are serious, but not bad enough to draw Disability benefits. I am the sole 'breadwinner'. If the same thing happened in our case -- and i dropped dead tomorrow -- neither my spouse nor my son would be eligible for any manner of Social Security benefits, because our committed relationship is not recognized by the federal government.

The marriages of same-sex couples who are legally married in Massachusetts are still not recognized by the Feds, so this can and still does happen to them. Our 'family' members who have been married in Spain, The Netherlands, or Canada are still not recognized by our federal government.

Conversely, two drunk straight people getting married in front of an Elvis impersonator and Barny the Dinosaur would NOT be denied this, just by virtue that they are a man/woman couple.

That's why it's not a 'states rights' issue...
For constitutional purposes, equal civil rights cannot be determined state by state.
If they were, African Americans would still not have the right to vote in some Southern states.

... while he was Mayor of NYC. Soon as he ran nationally, he demagoged the marriage issue.

And in fact I don't need to google it, I talked to her GLBT coordinator in December on the DADT issue and he conceded that it was now up to Congress - where before Bill's concession it would have been able to amend it with a mere executive order. That sell out cost us dearly.

....by marching in the NYC ST. Patrick's Day Parade and thereby snubbing the DEM boycott of same, which specifically *excludes* us?

GLBT activists worked for *years* ( successfully) to line up DEM pols to boycott this annual exclusionary insult. When Ms. "That's for others to conclude" arrived on the scene in 2000 looking for a safe senate seat to run for she *broke* the boycott... hungry for attention and votes.

Upshot: GLBT's still not allowed in St Pat's Parade in 2008.

The Clinton worship on this board is getting a little tiresome. Is it a case of believing what you want to believe? Is there anyone here who's over 25 years old?

When Barack Obama stops using Anti-Gay ACTIVISTS in his campaign, perhaps he might get some positive press here.

That, and an apology for doing it in the first place. For your edification, Section 1 of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution:

"Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws."

I don't see anything in there about "separate but equal" or "a BASIC set of rights" as opposed to EQUAL RIGHTS. A little light reading for Senator Obama. I think there was something about this in his oath of office?
