Anti-gay Oregon Lawmaker: ''Violent Backlash Awaits Gays Asking For Civil Rights''

Anti-gay Oregon lawmaker: violent backlash awaits gays asking for civil rights

State Senator Gary George

My, my, these bigots are getting bold. Oregon recently passed legislation that prohibits housing and employment discrimination based on sexual orientation, but there is a repeal effort under way, and one of the three lawmakers leading the charge is State Senator Gary George (sen.garygeorge@state.or.us).

The local LGBT publication Just Out, managed to snare an interview with George, and he had quite a lot to say about the uppity homos. A snippet.

Just Out: What sort of special rights do you feel that the Oregon Equality Act offers?

George: First off, I thought that was a fabrication of definition, in the sense that you gave special rights, it picks out another group, a lifestyle group, and says hmm, you have all these protections. The main thing that bothered us with the whole bill was the fact that here we go again, adding one more class of people that need to have special rights.

Just Out: What if an employee is fired because of his/her sexual orientation or gender identity? Isn't the Oregon Equality Act in place to guard against such discrimination?

George: As an employer, I don't wanna hear about it. This workplace is for work purposes. My advice to the gay community is SHUT UP, just don't talk about it. If you walk around talking about what you do in the bedroom, you should be on the pervert channel.

Just Out: What is your reaction to the recent murders of out gay youth in Florida and California?

George: Obviously murder is murder, there's no excuse for that. Here's what I'm saying, I think we're seeing a backlash, in other words if you push me too hard don't be surprised if I react. Gays will tend to react violently if people are oppressive toward them. If gays are oppressive toward straights, then you'll see a violent backlash. You're going to have a point where these groups develop and say I'm tired of these special privileges.

Jesus. These are truly hateful people. You have to wonder what this man would do if he had a child who didn't' fit gender norms, or was gay/lesbian. This man is justifying the tragic deaths of people because of discomfort some have with extending basic civil rights to a group of taxpaying citizens. This is sick.

- I know, I know. Just another garden-variety elected moron. But now even the public officials are issuing veiled threats. "Worst than terrarists" (Sally Kern). And now this cretin "just SHUT UP or there'll be a backlash."

There's always been a backlash you asshole. That's what has to STOP!!!

11. No, actually it doesn't.
Are you one of those people who thinks all homophobes are gay?

13. Do you know me well enough to assume I was even talking about boys or girls?
Projection much. Think David Vitter.

It's past time one of them was found with a farm animal. You know they're doing it.

14. I think most homophobes are just assholes. I doubt that many are into bestiality.
I also think dragging it into such areas completely invalidates the discussion.

15. And I KNOW that many politicians and most Republicans are hypocrites...
of the "Do as I say and not as I do" school of thought. The louder they rail against something, the more likely they are to be doing it, whether in an airport restroom, a New Orleans bordello, on an official trip, or any city that's a quick flight from DC or their hometown.

The only time I care if they're doing it with boys or girls is when they use "Teh Gay Agenda" to get elected, and I could care less if they're doing it in a monkey suit with a Bangkok hooker UNLESS they were among the many who were ready - full makeup, hair and wardrobe - 24/7 to vilify, then impeach, Bill Clinton for lying about something that was nobody's business and which I would have appreciated not hearing about every day for six months over dinner.

You pay attention to these assholes in your way, and I'll do it in mine: With derision and humor. I'm a big boy (really big) so I don't need anyone to tell me how I should think, feel or speak on the subject of hateful politicians who would just a soon see me in a prison camp as running around providing a positive role model for young gay people.

The only time I would use the "most homophobes are freaky closet cases" would be when confronting their hatred publicly to discredit their argument, embarrass them and shut them up. I'm not fond of people twisting something I've said or written to suit their personal agenda either, but this is DU and you have to play with all kinds if you want to play at all.

17. Being unwilling to derail their argument using their own tactics is the failing of a real Nancy...
Pelosi- or an apologist of some other stripe. You are the one who brought the "homophobes are closet cases" argument into the discussion by projecting it onto me. Personally I think you have a very dirty little mind. Nice try Hister, er, Sister. Are you fighting me here so you don't have to fight them there?

Save it for your next call-in to the Limburger Hour.

18. Not all homophobes are gay
But almost all the homophobes I have seen are hypocrits.

Phyllis Schalfly..Randell Terry, Jerry Falwell...

None were gay. All blazing hypocrits.

3. So...when gays are murdered, it's their own fault...
...because they insist on oppressing straight people?

Good God. There are no words to describe this sort of ugliness and cruelty. I'm sorry, people. I am just so sorry.

6. At the very least he should be censured for his hateful threat.
How the hell does a small minority "oppress" the majority? This guy and the other wingnuts like Limbaugh suffer from the same delusion that honest criticism somehow violates their rights.

7. The gay community has had to deal with constant backlashes for as long as all of us
have been alive.

We're not scared of cowardly bullies like him anymore.

I am not hiding. I am not running. I am standing up for what is right. I will not hesitate to walk through or over anyone who stands in my way. And there are more than likely hundreds of thousands of people out there just like me.

8. "If gays are oppressive toward straights, then you'll see a violent backlash."
Um, what? How the hell could gays be oppressive towards straights?

We are the minority. A minority can't oppress the majority, can they? Although after all this talk about PA and its pending "marriage ban," I did tell my wife (legal in the state of MA only, not here at home in PA) that this is an issue I would gladly give my life for...I'm so tired of these religious people and their hate hate hate.

"Live free or die..."

And this from yet another elected official. Dismaying.
