I got good news and bad news about the Day of Silence at my school
The good news is that way more people have signed up than I originally thought. I had hoped for maybe 40 people total participating. Instead I have had over 40 sign up on the first day and that was missing one of our four lunches. I am so amazed with the turnout. On the bad news front, we can no longer use the TV announcements and I have been told I can't participate at all in the Day of Silence (I had intended to participate outside my room). I guess you take the good with the bad so to speak. Anyone else have any updates on theirs?

1. Mine's going great!
We have our sign-up meeting tomorrow. We have 30 people confirmed on facebook, and I'm expecting at least 20-30 more. Sorry to hear about the announcements, though.

I also made some black lapel ribbons, in memory of Lawrence King. I made 240 - by myself! Almost all the staff at my school will be wearing them. I actually hope to start something with this black ribbon thing - I posted about it on my blog.

2. I was planning on wearing one but now can't
I am glad things are going well for you too. Gald your staff is both able and willing to participate.

3. What? They wouldn't let you wear a ribbon?
Weird.

4. As a faculty member we are forbidden from participating in student led activities
I have been directly ordered not to. I am quite unhappy but don't think I can do squat now.

5. Behave yourself
from an old activist. If you get in trouble, you are on your own.

6. I intend to
At first she gave me a wishy washy non answer so I asked for clarification and she gave me the direct order so that is that.

7. Follow the order for now, but...
It might be worth your time to consult with a lawyer or your union rep and see if the order is legal. Particularly if you are the faculty advisor for the activity, your principal might have broken the law or even violated your constitutional rights in ordering you not to participate.

9. How about
Just assign a silent reading day in class. You can write the info on the board, and won't have to talk, but will still be fulfilling your teaching duties. :)

10. I actually never intended to participate in class
I had only wanted to do so in the lounge, the halls, etc. I am being told I can't even do that.

8. They are up to 135 students with one more day of sign up to go
I figure we will be over 150 and maybe at 175 before it is all said and done.

11. I don't know if this will help
It's written for students, but it has a contact phone # and e-mail address so you may be able to get information on your rights as an employee. It is from Lambda Legal regarding the DOS: http://www.dayofsilence.org/downloads/LambdaLegal_DOS_QA.pdf
