School District Stands Behind Principal Who Outed Gay Teen Couple
(Memphis, Tennessee) A principal who outed two gay students, claiming they were a couple, did nothing wrong the Memphis Schools board says.

Last week the American Civil Liberties Union demanded that Hollis F. Price Middle High School Principal Daphne Beasley be reprimanded. (story)

In a letter to the school board the ACLU said that Beasley posted the names of the two boys on a list of students believed to be couples, revealing their relationship to their parents as well as other students and teachers.

The letter said that Beasley told the teens that they could not study together or walk together while on school grounds.

The letter accused Beasley of violating the students’ constitutional right to freedom of association. In its letter the ACLU demanded that the school board implement new policies that would prevent "these types of acts from occurring" in the future.

1. Silly ACLU, teenagers don't have rights. Wait... they do? Since when?
What, are we going to have to start treating them like human beings next? Why didn't anyone tell me?

/end impression of school board member.

2. pretty scary...but I don't think kids have any rights...except maybe human rights
and that I think that is pushing it...they are in effect the property of their parents or legal guardians...I could be wrong here...

3. Actually, they do have most rights.
The schools just like to ignore that fact. But almost every time it gets brought to court, the kids end up winning and the schools end up losing.

You'd think institutions of learning would, y'know, LEARN from their mistakes. :P

4. I thought I read somewhere that kids don't have the right to free speech
some court decided that a kid couldn't wear a shirt that was defaming to bush and company and he lost the fight to "free speech"...It would be nice to know that they have the same rights...but they can't drink or smoke or drive(until 16)...but can go to war at 18yrs... they're called "priviledges"...I think...

Schools being a place of learning...where did you come from...this is "Outcome Based Education" at it's best...oppss...did I just type that...sorry...:scared: :hide:

5. There are occasional fucked up courts that go along with the school boards
for instance, one in Texas that I read about that went along with the school board's ability to expell male students for having hair too long. God damn I'm glad I didn't live in Texas.

6. We don't know all the facts but
I read where they also had heterosexual couples on the list. They were there due to improper behavior in public. Why is it wrong to treat them the same? It seems to me that some want it both ways.

7. They violated all of the students rights
Although I'd say it was downright dangerous in the case of the gay couples. If the kids aren't out to their parents, there's often a good reason. Sometimes it's just fear or the kids just aren't ready to... but sometimes its because they know their parents will beat the shit out of them or kick them out of the house or generally make their lives a living hell for the rest of their time living there if they know.

9. I've studied the Constitution
quite a bit. I don't think you have a right not to be declared a couple. Are you saying gay couples should be treated differently than heterosexual couples?

11. Schools need to be safe places so that the students can learn
Should a list be made of students that are following non-Christian religions so that the teachers can keep an eye out for them?

How about if the student is studying Wicca, but his parents are born-again Christians?

Having the school create a list of books that students have checked out and provide that to parents would be a good idea, too?

Any of these would betray the level of trust that the student has in the school and undermine the relationships with the teachers.

14. ... that has to be one of the dumbest things I've read on here in a while.
There's no specific right that says that banks can have me arrested for breaking into their vaults and stealing money, but for some reason I'll still get arrested if I try it.

And in case you didn't notice, I specifically said that ALL the students rights had been violated. The gay and straight couples.

13. I call bullshit
read the article. They did not act "improperly" as you call it in public. And the het kids were not told to stay away from each other.

You do know you're in the LGBT forum, right?

8. Well since she likes to....
...slap signs outing people on their lockers at her school, I hope that she'll like this sign too. And its suitable to be made into bumper stickers.

- Hey! Now there's an idea!
