Ten states ask California to put same-sex marriage ruling on hold
Bob Egelko, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, May 30, 2008
<snip>
(05-30) 14:04 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The dispute over whether the California Supreme Court should put its ruling legalizing same-sex marriages on hold until voters consider the issue in November was joined today by attorneys general from 10 states, who say a postponement might save them from legal headaches over whether to recognize California marriages.

In papers filed with the court, the attorneys general - all Republicans(emphasis added) - said that if the ruling is implemented as scheduled June 17, it would subject their states to a profusion of lawsuits involving gay and lesbian residents traveling to California to get married.

Each of the states has a law barring recognition of same-sex marriages performed elsewhere. However, unlike Massachusetts - the only other state to legalize same-sex marriages - California allows residents of other states to wed here even if the marriage would not be permitted in their home state.

"An inevitable result of such 'marriage tourism' will be a steep increase in litigation" over whether the couple's home state must recognize their marriage, said Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, author of the brief.

Read the article at here.

Here's the listing of states: Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Utah.

Stay tuned...

2. "And then the courts might make us be fair and equal, too!" they sniveled.
Yep, no equality in California because it might inconvenience some judges in the square states. Certainly, if Californians are known for one thing, it's our deep concern for what people out in BFE think of our laws. :sarcasm:

6. "...it would subject their states to a profusion of lawsuits..."
Simple solution -- make it legal in ALL states (as it should be!).

Assholes.

10. Bwahahahaha! The Agenda is Nearly Complete!
Massachusetts was the first to fall! Now California follows suit! Bookends toppled on either side of this vast, priceless library of states! Soon, no tome shall be left standing! Bam! - There goes New York! Slam! - Arizona! Blam! - New Jersey! Bwahahahahaha!! And when the last ban on same-sex marriage finally falls, the event we've worked so hard for will finally happen: the death of marriage itself! Yes, once we've undermined the sanctity of heterosexual wedded bliss, it will wither and die like a plucked rose...and without its solid bedrock to provide support, society itself will crumble to dust! All for the glory of our master, Satan! It's all going directly according to plan! Hail Satan! Hail Satan! Bwahahahahahaha!!!

P.S. Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!

11. I hope the court
decides not to stay the ruling. What the republican attorneys general are hoping is that the whole issue gets swept under the carpet so that they don't have to deal with it on their collective watch.

Whether the issue is decided in our favor today or tomorrow, eventually it WILL happen. The Arc of History swings forward as it must.

13. The list doesn't really surprise me...
Except for New Hampshire. That's the one state that doesn't belong in that group! NH has civil unions and they see the sky hasn't fallen, plus I am sure there are lots of former Mass. residents who now live in NH and they know what gay marriage has done to Mass. (translation: absolutely nothing). What's up with that, New Hampshire???

18. wah
What this really says is that they hope California's voters amend their constitution with the ban so they don't have to bother. But if the court defers to that vote, the opposition will use those states' concerns to help energize their own voters.

19. This Is Why...
My wife and I chose to marry in Canada. Who the hell wants to get married and then find out six months down the line that it's being struck down because of ignoramuses out in Bumfuck. Give it up, right-wing yahoos...same-sex marriage will eventually be legal whether you like it or not!

20. aw they shoulda thought of that before they made it illegal
for us to decide who we wanted to share our lives and property with.

As if that would stop us anyway.

Yeah, states rights fuckers! There is a reason the clause "equal treatment under the law" applies here. When different states grant different civil rights you have a problem.

Get the fuck out of our bedrooms and lives. It will make things so much easier.
