Next Move In Gay Battle Up To Episcopal Church Archbishop Warns
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/02/022705anglicans.htm

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams suggested Sunday that the North American churches that have elected a gay bishop and blessed same-sex relationships might have to back down if the worldwide Anglican communion is to hold together.

"Though I don't want to second guess what the official bodies of the North American churches might do, what has been said to them is that the cost of carrying on with this particular sort of unilateral development is very high," Williams told British Broadcasting Corp. radio.

He was detailing what conservatives had told American and Canadian church leaders last week at a crisis meeting of the heads of 35 Anglican national churches. (story)

2. I used to respect Rowan Williams - no more
I am a lifetime Episcopalian and leader of the local Integrity chapter, so this hits very close to home. The Episcopal Church in the U.S. has been rather publicly and thoughtfully moving towards full inclusion of GLBT people for around thirty years. We have been working on the theological basis for inclusion this entire time. It appears that the rest of the world has not been listening, which is a shame, but not an excuse. Backing down is simply not an option that should be entertained.

The consecration of Bishop Robinson is the result of a series of democratic actions by the people of the Diocese of New Hampshire and affirmed by the General Convention of the ECUSA to find the best person for the job. The people of New Hampshire, who have known Gene Robinson for decades, chose him as their Bishop. The fact that Bishop Robinson was elected and affirmed is a high point in the full inclusion of GLBT people in the church, but not an endpoint.

Rowan Williams is smarter than this, and knows better, and has been better in the past. Jesus Christ deserves better.
