Obama's VP short list: Rep. Chet Edwards (D-TX)...
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 12:36 PM by keepCAblue
Well,well...yet another disappointing potential choice by Obama. And Pelosi says Chet Edwards is her favorite and hope Obama will pick him over the others on his short list. Not good news for gays or animals. Chet Edwards' voting record for gay civil rights and animal welfare stinks. He was one of the few Dems who voted FOR the constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman and AGAINST ENDA, the bill which would have protected gays and lesbians from discrimination in the workplace. Chet Edwards was also one of the few Dems who voted AGAINST the ban on horse slaughter, as well as just about every other bill proposed or supported by both the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA.

If Chet Edwards is Obama's pick, I will not vote for Obama. I will simply stay home on election day. Period.

1. he's on the media's shortlist.
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 12:20 PM by ErinBerin84
(btw- I agree with you that he would be an unacceptable pick. I just feel like the media is scrambling to give us all kinds of false scoops bc the Obama camp isn't talking)

6. Love it or leave it, right?
How much compromise is too much compromise?

What real change?

10. Better to stay home than cast a vote against my own best interests...
Edited on Fri Aug-22-08 12:33 PM by keepCAblue
So many people here on DU, in elections past, criticized and vilified Log Cabin Republicans who voted for Bush because they (stupidly) voted against their own best interests. My (and other GLBT's) best interests would obviously not be served by voting for an Obama/Edwards ticket. If it comes down to making a choice of voting for who hates us less, that is not a compromise I am willing to swallow. If Obama and the DEMS want my and other GLBT's votes--votes that would help defeat McLame--then they damn well better earn it. If they can't respect my humanity and civil rights they have no right to my vote. You can prostitute your vote if you like, that's your choice. I won't.

25. Jesus Christ, I'm So Sick of This Meme.
Instead of blaming the VOTER for refusing to choose between two terrible candidates, why don't you blame the CANDIDATES? If Obama doesn't get elected, it's fucking OBAMA'S fault for alienating damn near EVERYBODY by trying not to alienate ANYBODY. I'm supposed to blame myself for the decline of America if I refuse to vote for a pandering asshat who's announced to the world that I don't deserve the same rights he does?

In which thimble do you store your self-respect?

7. Way to miss the point.
This is not a case of Obama picking someone the OP "doesn't like." It's a matter him picking someone that legislates against equal rights.

Is that OK with you?

18. How's this?
When someone is on Obama's VP short list that has voted to include discrimination against you in the US Constitution, then get back to me.

Until then, stop giving a pass to homophobes just because they have a "D" after their last name.

20. Same here.
The fact that this idea is even being floated around is obsiously upsetting and personal to me. Hopefully, when Obama does announce his choice it won't be Edwards (not this one, at least), and our whole conversation here will be moot.

I think the suspense is getting to all of us. :hi:

21. I don't know this Edwards
guy at all, and I'm leery of judging a person on the merits of one post..so forgive me for my ignorance if he is a rotten apple. These days I have to curb my outrage. I should stay away from the "I'm staying home if" threads. :hi:

So my post was not based on ignorance but rather his voting record, which speaks volumes.

5. Damn near a deal breaker for me.
Chet Edwards is a right wing jerk from Texas (I was born there, unfortunately).

Obama has passed the center and is in fascist territory now, if he picks this Edwards.

And for Pelosi to suggest him is another reason why she is unqualified to be Speaker.

14. He would be disappointing, but they are ALL disappointing
Biden - Credit card industry whore. Supports some radical judicial nominees

Kaine - Weak on choice. Booooring.

Bayh - DLC, imperialist foreign policy

Clinton - Don't even get me started.

Hell, even the nominee himself has been incredibly wishy washy on some issues that most DUer's care a hell of a lot about.

The choices we've been given this election cycle (from President to VP nominee) frankly BLOW. I still think I'll be able to pull the lever, but I certainly won't hold it against anyone who can't.

Stay home if you want, but don't come on here and blather about it, because you will (rightfully) get your ass handed to you.

23. That's rich...
"Stay home if you want, but don't come on here and blather about it, because you will (rightfully) get your ass handed to you."

That's right...if you can't say anything nice/positive about Obama / election choices, then we should just keep our mouths shut for fear of backlash. That statement and kind of philosophy is epidemic in this country, thanks to Bush and rethuglicans. And if that is what DU has deteriorated to, then this place and the people who attempt to shut down dissidents (i.e., anyone who doesn't agree with them) is no better than the oppressive world Bushco has created.

26. It has nothing to do with saying nice things about Obama/election choices
You'll note I have precious little positive to say about Obama and his purported running mate choices.

But withholding praise and shooting your mouth off about how you'll never vote for this or that are two different things.

If you can't vote for the ticket, that's cool. It'll be a nose-holder for me personally, but spare us the threats and just do what you gotta do.

16. I have never heard of this guy?
He sounds horrible, but he also sounds like a distant possibility. I don't think any House members are under serious consideration, certainly not this guy. A House member as VP (even a great House member) brings almost nothing to the ticket.

Obama was not my first choice, but I have already contributed, and lined up behind him but I will add this character to my short list of dealbreakers(Nunn,Kaine). I am old and sick and tired of being lied to.
