Protect Marriage, Protect Children, Prohibit Divorce
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 03:28 PM by BuffyTheFundieSlayer
They need signatures! Fight the "Yes on 8" camp with their own ammo.

A Petition for a California State Proposition that Prohibits Divorce Between Heterosexual Married Couples
Divorce destroys the sanctity of marriage and its powerful influence on the betterment of society. This proposition would keep the very meaning of marriage from being transformed into nothing more than a contractual relationship between two adults. Prohibiting divorce between heterosexual married couples will keep the interests of children and families intact. We will continue to celebrate marriage as the union of husband and wife, not as a relationship between "Party A" and "Party B." The marriage of a man and a woman has been at the heart of society since the beginning of time and it promotes the ideal opportunity for children to be raised by a mother and a father in a family held together by the legal, communal, and spiritual bonds of marriage. As a society we should put the best interests of children first, and those interests lie in traditional marriage. Permitting divorce destroys marriage as we know it and causes a profound harm to society. We should be restoring marriage, not undermining it.

And for those of you who voted yes on Prop 8 but disagree with this petition...Why? This petition is copied and pasted from literature from your website, ProtectMarriage.com, but applied to Divorce instead of Gay Marriage. So how can you argue with your own words?

Sign the Petition!

4. It's not petty
They're trying to impose their religious beliefs on us via force of law. If that's what they're going to do they need to be prepared to be held to them. The Bible forbids divorce far more times than it forbids homosexuality.

This is pushing their very own arguments back on them. If the real goal is to protect (heterosexual) marriages, families and children then the way to do it is prevent divorce.

Petty is people thinking same-sex couples getting married is going to destroy society and even the world, and therefore they have to ban it across the nation. Holding them to their own words and actions is not petty in any way.

7. Petty is stooping to their level.
Petty is giving any credence at all to the bullshit argument about 'protecting the sanctity of marriage.'

Not being petty would be simply fighting back and working to undo their work, not wasting time trying to show how people opposed to marriage equality are bigots AND hypocrites. Let their bigotry speak for itself. Make it an issue of them being bigots.

I'm reminded of an expression:
You can get in the mud and wrestle with a pig, but only the pig's going to like it.

8. We're not giving any actual credence to their BS arguments
We're throwing them back at them so when they come back and try to defend against them they themselves will prove how invalid they are. How better to diffuse them and make them useless against us?

9. By using their own arguments, you are giving credence to them.
Look at the 'debate' over evolution.
By presenting their own arguments as part of your own, you are creating the illusion that their arguments have merit and are equally valid to yours. People have been talking about how idiotic the 'protecting marriage' argument is for at least a decade and what has come of it?

Does a majority of people recognize how ridiculous it is? Have the fundies declared defeat on that point and changed their focus? Of course not. By trying to push fake legislation, you're not illuminating the errors in their argument, only highlighting how petty you can be.
