Newsweek bombarded by right wing for marriage equality cover. Speak out.
From HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN:

How many times have you had to hear opponents of marriage equality cite passage after passage from the Bible? How many times have you wanted to know exactly the right response to their literary acrobatics?

Newsweek's recent cover story, "The Religious Case for Gay Marriage" provides just that – debunking all the popular myths.

The response? On the first day, Newsweek was "bombarded" with 20,000 emails in opposition to its article.

Stand up for equality and fairness - send Newsweek a note today.

The current cover story of Newsweek magazine titled, "The Religious Case for Gay Marriage" should be read by each and every member of our community. The piece provides an in-depth debunking of many of the popular myths about Scripture that the religious-right has used time and time again.

How refreshing to see a major, mainstream American news outlet speaking the truth in such a courageous way.

But, as you would fully expect, the right-wing has launched a massive uproar to the piece by flooding Newsweek's editors with thousands of letters in opposition. Last night, I interviewed Lisa Miller, Religion Editor for Newsweek Magazine and the article's author, on my Sirius XM radio show, The Agenda. You can hear Lisa in her own words describe how on the first day the story came out Newsweek was "bombarded" with 20,000 emails in opposition to the article.

Friends, when someone is courageously willing to stand up and take on the those who have for so long twisted the words of the Bible and gone unchecked – it is our obligation to make sure they know that there are also millions of us standing right on their side.

Don't let the voices of extremists silence those of inclusion and truth. Join me by sending a letter of support to Newsweek today.

3. It's time to debunk the Religious Right...

they do not stand up for Jesus Christ. Whether you are a Christian or not, please understand that the so-called Christian Right is nothing more than a tool of the fascist elite.

16. My Readback:
The anti-Homosexual agenda does not know the meaning of the 1st Commandment. Anyone who claims to know the weight of the sins of another in the mind of God, relative to the weight of his/her own sins is a Blasphemer. You do not KNOW that your "little" failure in such-and-such is less wrong, less bad, less evil than what YOU think are the faults of others. It is this assumption of Righteousness that PROFANES the sacrifice of Lord Jesus with Money Changers in the Temple selling, amongst other things, REAL Blood for OIL. It is this Blaspheming profanity that "Christianity" in the U.S. has become that damns this country to Hell, not decent people who are honestly trying, however imperfectly, to learn how to love one another.

The good news is that the editor of Newsweek, Jon Meacham knows his stuff about religion, I heard him speak for fairness recently on the Maher show.

I think they picked the wrong fight, Meacham is smart, mainstream and is well respected politically and in the media world. He is not folding to the their "blacklist" threats, more right wing boycott threats, it was good coverage and a fair article that spoke in respectful terms about faith and gay rights and particularly gay marriage equality.

It's called freedom of the press and freedom of speech, it cuts both ways.

10. I cited my subscription number
Instead of hopping on the mass email, I sent my own, with my subscription number attached.

I mentioned that I'm not gay myself, but I think that Newsweek is on the correct side of history on this issue.

9. And go and BUY a copy or subscribe
They need the revenue and the real show of support.
Better yet subscribe precisely because they are the only MSM courageous enough to do this.

12. "Let the letters and emails come."
"One era's accepted reality often becomes the next era's clear wrong."

-Jon Meacham Editor of Newesweek, in this issue's: "The Editors Desk."
......

He knows exactly what he's doing, what he believes and the reason why they put gay marriage on the cover.

Good for him!

17. This Is My Comment on Readback
Hi, semtex guy, You make an interesting point. Most religious right types I have known over the years are all sweetness and light until you challenge some belief or other that they hold. Then they turn vengeful and nasty. i have seen this over and over and over over the years.

I think that people would not be trying to find Biblical justification for same-sex marriage but for the fact that the religious fanatics of whatever reactionary religion are trying to foist their RELIGIOUS views on the rest of us. You don't want gay marriage...by all means do not allow LGBT weddings in your particular house of worship. No brainer: a given religious body does NOT have to provide religious marriage for those it feels do not fit their criteria for marriage. I will defend that right to the death.

The problem arises when the religious wrong decides to not only deny religious marriage to LGBT people but does not want civil marriage for them, either. You can do whatever you want in a church setting, but keep YOUR church out of MY state! This is NOT a Christian country--it is a PLURALISTIC, DIVERSE society and it is time the religious right wakes up to that fact.

18. You nailed that! Well done. They do like to conflate
our civil rights with their ceremony and ritual and then say we are taking their freedom? WTF? Honestly, that is so old and lame by now.

They can have their weddings I don't want to see clergy presiding over any aspect of my life. But that's just me. I do understand that there are GLBTQ folks who would and not saying anything against that at all.

But, we do want full civil rights and you delineated that really well.
